I have a previously owned, barely used, blue lacquer Waterman Gentleman. I have no paperwork with it. It is leaking at the seam at the top of the section between the gold on the section and the blue lacquer. This problem occurs with both a cartridge and the converter. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi there. Are you talking about the part of the section near the nib, or the part of the section near where the converter goes in?

The gold section near the nib actually screws out (counter-clockwise) along with the rest of the nib. This exposes the plastic internal section (the nib + feed, and a plastic sheeve which covers them). It's possible you might have a crack in there.

Not to hijack the thread, bit my waterman expert is leaking where the converter attaches. It gets ink in the body of the pen. Is that what you got?

WaffleKing - Yes, The gold section and lacquer seam, near the nib, is where it is leaking. I can blow soap bubbles out of this seam from the barrel end.

fierdog - Yes, I think this is also true.

I agree that the leak is most likely at the junction of feed and cartridge/filler.

Does this section need to be removed with some heating to (soften shellac or sealer) or just some carefully turning of the section. I do not want to damage the lacquer finish.
Some questions:

1. Once, the section is removed accomplished do you have some pointers on fixing the possible crack?
2. Is this a part that needs to be replaced?
3. Does some leakage occur normally, due to the design, and the threads of the gold section simply need some section sealer?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Well, you can remove the nib section by simply holding the gold section near the nib, and unscrewing it counter-clockwise. That should seperate the plastic inner section from the lacquer outer section.

The gold section also unscrews from the plastic inner section, however the threads are glued with shellac, so I don't recommend trying to remove it (I never have).

I suggest you test the black plastic section with a water syringe after you remove it from the lacquer section. If you find a leak, try plugging it with some shellac or rosin-based section sealant (I've heard www.tryphon.it is a good source).

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the picture. That was very helpful and thoughtful. It gives one confidence to see the goal before you start.

It came apart without much effort, and you were right. There is small crack coming off the gold ring closest to the nib, and the sealant material around this joint was also coming away from the feed. I have some rosin-based section sealant and I will try that. The crack is very slight. It should work well.

Thanks for the help.
