I'm debating about buying a sailor sapporo. I've heard about their famous nibs and am very intrigued. The only thing that concerns me is the size of the pen. I do prefer larger pens, like a waterman phileas size or lamy 2000 size. I would buy the Sailor Pro Gear, but an extra $100 is out of my budget right now. Whats your opinion?

I'm sorry to say that Sapporos are small - try a Sailor 1911 instead!

12,2 cm is just too small and the nib is disappointing. The Sailor 1911 is better.

I'm talking about my pen happyberet.gif

The Sapporo is barely larger than an M200 if that helps any. tongue.gif

Mine has a wonderful nib. So do my two minis. But if you like Phileas size, then you'll probably find the Sapporo too small.

Maybe wait a while until you can feel better about the extra $100 for a Pro Gear.

hmmmm is it worth if for the nib though?

The nib on my Sapporo is pretty disappointing too. Smooth enough but feels kind of dead. Yet, I have a Sapporo Mini with a spectacular nib. I think there is always variation. I also have a Pro Gear with a B nib that's very smooth and expressive. I like the extra size of the Pro Gear, but it's not as comfortable as my full-size 1911.

In actual use I find the Waterman Phileas to be longer but its girth is pretty similar to that of the Sapporo's; the full-sized PG OTOH has a chunkier grip. Hope the photos help. Oh and haven't had any dissatisfaction with a Sailor nib, yet wink.gif

Great, the girth was probably my main concern. Im sure that once the Sapporo is posted it should be fine lengthwise. What about the nib....its seems to have gotten great reviews and some not so good comments.

Search the site, you'll find dozens of positive comments about Sailor nibs.

I have a dozen or so Professional Gear models... and have tested about ~16 nibs - 14K and 21K. There have been no problems in my personal experiences.

If the pen is too small, don't compromise - you'll never end up using it. Get the pen which is right for you.

Unlike a couple of the other posters, I love the (Music) nib on my Sapporo. The M-F on my 1911 is just as impressive.

Would a 1911 be a better choice than the Sapporo then since it is a little bigger?

Since you said you prefer bigger pens, I would say yes smile.gif

Just thought I'd add: the Sailor 1911 model comes in Full and Mid sizes. Their measurements correspond with the Sailor PG series. The 1911s are longer due to their torpedo shapes; they're similar in diameters. I get a kick out of switching mine back and forth. You can find details at the Sailor site:

1911 Full-sized

1911 Mid-sized & colored:

Full-Sized: http://www.sailor.co.jp/BUNGU/PDF/11-2036.pdf
Slim & Mini: http://www.sailor.co.jp/BUNGU/PDF/11-2011.pdf

If I may suggest, check with Pam at OscarBraun.com; Pam usually has the best prices. I doubt there's a $100 difference between the full and mid sizes. Nib wise zip problem. Hope you enjoy your new Sailor.

Bananafish, what is that Sailor Sapporo with black and red color scheme? I've not seen that one before. It reminds me of a Marlen Basilia. I hope they make it in the larger Professional Gear size... but haven't found anything yet.

MYU, the Sapporo is a Red & Black bought from Tate. It's also available in the full-sized PG version. http://store.shopping.yahoo.co.jp/shop-tat...ml?b=1&n=40

I like the red & black motif too! It's probably a conventional color combination, but I think it's one of the best. Red and black are two of the most traditional colors; both are so bold with equally strong presence, but somehow harmonized so well when combined together.

Anyway I was playing with some Sailors earlier by swapping their caps to get different color combinations. I find that while the black cap and red body worked perfectly, the reverse of red cap and black body didn't look as good. Or maybe it was just my imagination; I'm curious what do you, or what others think?
