I'm about to buy a gold plated Montblanc 146 with a 14k nib.

Do you know if they came with a 14k nib? How old could the fountain pen be?

Are there gold plated fake 146's on the market and how could I recognize a fake one?

Do you know the normal value?

If you are in the know and willing to answer one or more questions, I am grateful to you.

Hi. I'm far from an expert, but I have asked whether there are any fake piston filling MBs on the market. No one has ever responded that such a thing exists. It seems that the counterfeits that others report are c/c fillers. So unless someone has seen a fake 146...

No, all Montblanc Meisterstück Solitaire fountain pens came and come only with an 18k nib.

Yes, http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/in...showtopic=63637 but none of them have a piston filling mechanism.

The 146 Le Grand in black resin and gold has a standard 14K nib, and is only piston fill. Le Grand Traveller is cartridge fill, with a gold plated cartridge holder. These, of course, are the current models.

For older models, I'm not familiar with, but some searching here might result in a few leads.

If you have access to the pen, do a quick test with a magnet to the nib. If there is attraction, then I would highly suggest that the nib is fake and probably made out of steel.

Wolf, after reading your post again, I think there might be confusion (at least on my part).

Are you referring to a Black Resin and Gold 146 or a precious metal 146 in gold.

I had assumed Black and Gold trim, but I think penparadise assumed you meant a precious metal Solitare.

Could you clarify?

Thanks for your reply. I meant the precious metal gold 'case'. I don't know if it is called the 'gold-plated pinstripe solitaire 146', but it is gold like that one.

Therefore, I wondered if these gold ones come with a 14K nib.

Thanks for your reply, Axel.

That's what I thought. So, it's strange that this gold 146 has a 14K nib. Do you know if all Gold 146 Montblancs are called Solitaire?
This one has a piston filler, so it's maybe not fake, but why the 14k nib?

Kind regards,
Tom

Hi Tom,

To give a correct answer I have to know some more details:
I persume that the overlay is a pinstripe one, yes?
What hallmark is on the overlay?
Is it 585 then it's probably a vintage pen with a 14k juweler's overlay and then a 14k nib will be original.
Is it 750 then it's a solid gold overlay and made between 1982 and 1992. Then a 14k or an 18k nib can be on the pen, both is possible and OK.
Is it 925 then it's a goldplated solid silber overlay, called Vermeil. Then the pen is a "Solitaire" and it is made after 1992. And then an 18k nib should be on the pen.

I thought you have the Vermeil version.

Best regards,
Axel

According to the seller the pen was from 2001 and according to your and other information it could not have a 14k nib.

I've decided not to buy the pen. Thank you for your replies!

Older Mont Blanc 146 came with 14K single tone gold nib,I know that because I own such a pen (its about 30 years old).
