So... in the process of trying to find my Dad a new pen for father's day, I found myself a pen. I had been looking at buying him a Visconti Mazzi Roma, which he would absolutely adore, but I think it might have to wait for a while longer. While looking at the Mazzi collection, I came across the Queztal. I knew the second I saw that pen that I had to have it as I am an avid parrot fan and have two of my own.

I went by my local shop, and they had one there. #35/206 - even better, it was on clearance! I couldn't believe it, so I bought it right then and there for cost of what they paid two years ago.

I'm in heaven. I'm almost afraid to use it, but I certainly didn't buy it to just look at it.

Anyone else have this one or any of the Mazzi's?

Here's a couple of photos.

Edit - updated the photos with my good camera.

Wow, that is beautiful (though the bird depicted is not a Quetzal).

Now I understand why you did what you did - hope you can still get your dad a pen!

The battery on my good camera is dead, but here's a photo of it anyways.

Thanks. I should still have plenty left over to get something for my Dad as well. The pen itself is called the Queztal, although I realize that neither Macaw is a Queztal. Artist error, I guess.

This pen writes like a dream. It's a bit on the heavy side, but I love the fat size of it as I have large hands for a girl.

I understand that the Mazzi collection is a yearly LE made with the spray gun technique by Mr.Mazzi (a famous artist in Italy) based on the Van Gogh Maxi.
Is that correct?
Every year Mr.Mazzi choose a theme and create a set of 5/6 pens...

Congratulation looks colorful. I have a Maxi Yellow that it's heavy. Yours must be even more because of the metal end...

Cheers,
JokerGirl
Yes, the Mazzi collection is done every year by Claudio Mazzi of Italy. He is most well known for painting Zippo lighters and things for Ducati. It is amazing the amount of detail that goes into each pen. Each detail is so small, it's a wonder he's able to do it so accurately, and especially since it is curved.

The first year, 2005, he actually did 12 pens, but apparently it was so painstaking that in 2006, he only went with 6. The theme of each is recurring each year, but the scene is different. The themes are Master of the Sky, Civilization, Tribe, Author, Place, and one other one that I can't remember at this time.

The pen is gorgeous. It is a bit on the heavy side, but the nib glides so beautifully that I don't really notice the weight that much.
Stylo
I must admit that this is not exactly my cup of tea, but for folks who like this type of style, the Mazzis I saw at the L.A. pen show were quite stunning, as your photo nicely conveys. Enjoy it! smile.gif

I love some of the Mazzi pens. I'm hoping to see some tomorrow and maybe come home with one. smile.gif
JokerGirl
Which one have you been eyeballing the most? They are truly stunning works of art, and I'm glad to be the owner of one.

I got a FrankenMazzi today.

Now I'm green with jealousy.

Nothing wrong with a macaw. smile.gif Awesome pen. I love birds too and I think the pen is awesome!

Hey, JokerGirl, now that you've had some time to spend quality time with your parrot, how do you like it? I don't normally go in for such bold finishes but that one continues to float around in my mind's eye.
JokerGirl
It's been a very good pen so far. I've had it loaded with PR Ebony Purple and Naples Blue on and off and havn't had any problems. I've found that with the Ebony Purple loaded up, it tends to write with a finer line, whereas with the Naples Blue, it writes with a wider line. The 14k nib makes for a nice amount of spring when writing.

The pen is on the heavier side of things, but it's not too terrible. I wrote out about 25 Thank You cards last weekend for an engagement party that was thrown for us, and didn't have too many problems with my hand getting sore from it.

My only real complaint is that I wish there was a rubber gasket where the barrel screws onto the nib. I find that it tends to come loose and I always find myself screwing it back together when I take the cap off.

On the plus side of things, I get LOTS of good comments on it. People have been really going goo-goo-gah-gah over it.

Thanks! That gasket issue is a little disconcerting. It begs the question of whether it was a design flaw or just an oversight in assembly. I'm glad you're enjoying it, it sure looks like a beauty to my eyes. smile.gif

I've had the same unthreading experience with Pelikans (M400 & 140).

When I know the day will be fast and furious, I take a snap cap to work, usually the Lamy 2000 or Cross Townsend.

JokerGirl, how is the nib? It looks long and narrow, similar to the nib on a Yard-O-Led ... which is a joy to use. Is it smooth and can you get any flexy line variation?

Joe in Seattle
........please don't tell Gandalf, my Quaker parrot, that you bought your bird a pen, he'll want one, too.
JokerGirl
AfterMyNap, I'm guessing that it was probably a design flaw on their part because none of the Mazzi's I've looked at had a gasket on it. It's still a gorgeous pen though, I just need to take two seconds to tighten it up before I go writing.

Russ, the nib is extremely smooth to use. It's got just a tiny bit of scratch to it, but not too much and not too little. It's really at that perfect spot for me. I am able to get some line variation between when I flex the nib and not. I'm wondering if I could find a small, paper thin rubber piece to place in it to act as a seal for the threads.

Joe, I won't let the word out that there's a parrot pen smile.gif Lets hope Sam can keep his mouth quiet as well. Him being an Amazon, I don't hold high hopes.
