I ordered a Sailor Professional Gear gold trim with fine nib from mottishaw about 2 weeks ago. It arrived in the mail today, although the Moleskine reporter I purchased did not show up(i was billed for it too). Anyways the pen is amazing, very fine nib as everyone was saying; The nib is also quite smooth for such a fine point, a little bit of tooth though. The fine Sailor nib makes my extra-fine MB 149 nib look like a bold. I currently have one of the Sailor cartridges in the pen which Im not too fond of, when it runs out I'll be putting Noodlers BP black in the converter. The fit and finish on the pen are superb, very shiny and smooth. Im quite glad to say that Sailor are using the same "precious resin" that Mont Blanc are using. I believe its called PMMA resin, either way it looks and feels identical has similar weight and also has the wine red translusensce when held up to the light. I really like MB's resin so this is great to see on a much cheaper pen.
I personally wish the pen was larger, it deffinately needs to be posted. I also kind of prefer the torpedo shape of the 1911 and Meisterstuck pens. After using a 149 the Sailor pro gear looks and feels really petite. It's actually quite similar in size to the Waterman phileas, just a tad bit shorter. I may post pictures later if Im feeling up to it. I think my next pen purchase will be the full size 1911 with gold trim.

ehh...whine whine whine. smile.gif

Enjoy the pen. I agree, get some different ink in there. I had the Sailor ink in one of mine and it was okay, just not as lubricating as I like.

Yes, do get the full-size 1911 - it's a great pen, though very light.

Isn't it great to anticipate next purchases? biggrin.gif

But keep on enjoying the one you got!!!

Hi,

I hope you enjoy the pen! Sailor Professional Gear pens are very nice. I'm sure that it's not Precious Resin though. There are a lot of black plastics that shine red like the ABS in the Parker Reflex, black Pelikans, and many other black pens. The plastics used by Sailor seem quite durable.

Congratulation for your new pen !

I love my ProGear, and I definitely don't need to post it. The length and the weight are just fine in my hand (but the more I use it the more I think I would have prefer a girth 1mm smaller...). But most important the 21k nib is fantastic. I hope you'll enjoy it !

Btw, I'm thinking about a 1911 too... Noooooo crybaby.gif

It could be a whole lot worse. At least we are not gassing after a really expensive pen like a 149 or something; Although another 149 or 146 would be sweet.

But you know, I was happy with my Parker Jotter. Then came the Sapporo, you cannot let this beauty out there alone. Which is a terrible mistake, because then you HAVE to buy a ProGear. I guess it's a bit like getting a M400, and then a M800. It the way it goes.

So now I want a dark blue Sapporo Mini, just because I find it so cute. I'm not even sure I would/could use it since it's a very small pen, and I don't like to post (even if the pen is designed to...) But it's cute, so...

And a Sapporo Spring Blue, because the color is amazing ! I know, I have a Sapporo. But black, and not spring blue... And a 1911, which could be my ProGear mate. The 1911 with its torpedo shape being a bit more distinguished, the ProGear being the workhorse.

And a Lamy 2K, I just want to try one. When you add all of these, it's worse than a 149 (and don't tell me about inks!)

I'm a starving student, btw crybaby.gif

It will feel very natural to post it. It's the same diameter as the Sapporo so while it's shorter, it still feels plenty comfy. I like the Pro Gears but could never move up to that size (fortunately for my bank account.)

hmph! Have to agree to disagree. The "classic" cigar shape is over used, IMO. I was glad to see Sailor put out something with different lines. smile.gif They're both lovely, and I really wanted a 1911M in yellow for a long time. But I loves my Sappors (and minis)

That's where I'm heading in a few weeks. That's why I got that last "big" purchase in (Orange Sapporo) and have to live with the inks I have for now. Think I can survive on 35 inks? smile.gif

good luck with the addiction. It's not easy. But it is fun.

Yes I know the cigar shape is over used and I do prefer my Sapporo/ProGear design, which is more dynamic IMHO. But you know, a nice cigar shape pen could be a nice signature pen... Someting like a Custom 742, maybe... (another one that I want crybaby.gif )

Sailors are really great. The full size 1911 seems to me to be a better balanced pen than the 1911M or the Sapporo because of the larger nib. Never owned the full-size Pro Gear.

Sailor Blue seems to be a nice color ink, but like some have said the lubrication is pretty poor. A very old school ink as far as I can tell and there are definitely better out there.

Good choice ordering from Mottishaw - my 1911 B nib I got from him is heavenly, better than any other nib I own. I will get a Sailor F from him next. smile.gif

Best,
Summer

Maybe you should have bought the new KoP Pro Gear, which is 14cms long and boasts the oversized 21k nib of the KoP.

I agree..I've the old KOP with the bands and it's a definitely different tactile experience than a 1911 or a PG. The nib is much more springy and produces a softer line, if it makes sense. However, the c/c fill is pathetic and with my M nib I run out of a cartridge in a day. This pen begs to be a piston filler. Also to be noted that the M and the B nibs are truly European M/B, so that's different from Sailor's other pens.
Incidentally, I could not afford the Realo when it came out, but will definitely go for the piston-fill 1911 when it comes out in the future.

Will there be piston fillers in Sailor's future? That would be something to look forward to...

There are already some threads about that, 2009 if I'm not too drunk (which is not sure, thanks to Laphroaig roflmho.gif )
