When I write, I often find myself accompanied by a pot of tea that quickly disappears as I become engrossed in my writing. What is your favorite drink that accompanies your writing?
dcwaites
I suspect some might wish for another option -- a good single-malt whiskey...

Deirdre
I like green tea a lot; I'm particularly fond of rice-based green teas (e.g. Republic of Tea's Tea of Inquiry). Usually, I write at night, so I don't want more caffeine, so green tea seems appropriate.

When I'm editing, I often do that in the morning, so coffee.

And, as always, I keep water nearby.

So: all three.

I tend not to drink soda while I'm writing, because I tend to forget how much soda I've drunk when I do.

Haha, I'm not of drinking age, so that didn't even occur to me. I might add an extra option, just for completeness.

EDIT: I don't see how to add another poll option. Is it possible?
freznow
I never drink coffee or soda, and only rarely hot cocoa. So the other three in rotation, depending on my mood and the time of day.

I was looking for the Aberlour option.

Actually, though, I drink tea when I write. I can't drink and write, even one drink.

If I want to alter my perceptions, loosen my inner editor's tight grip on my writing mind, I write when I am really, really sleepy. But otherwise, yes, tea.
Shangas
I don't actually drink while writing. Well, sometimes I do.

On the occasions that I do, I like...

Cold weather:

- Hot sweet herbal tea.
- Hot Chocolate.

Hot weather:

- Lemonade.
- Sparkling mineral water.
- Iced chocolate.

Yes, interestingly enough, I don't like Coke. I just can't stand the taste of caffeine.
Carène
Early in the day, definitely strong coffee. Later on, I lean toward red wine. Interesting to see how my handwriting changes...

Coffee between 9 and noon
Water between noon and 5
Wine, beer, or whiskey between 5 and 10
Brandy or liqueur between 10 and bedtime

Not all items every day of course, but this is my general pattern.

I tend to keep iced water, tea (hot or iced), or diet pepsi on hand when I am doing much of anything at my desk.

Many of the green teas sold in the US are tea-based, and therefore caffeinated. My wife discovered that when trying to cut down on caffeine by subbing green tea for her usual Lipton or English Breakfast Tea, or coffee, which I suppose I have corrupted her with. She doesn't really like coffee; she just drinks it for the caffeine.

Coffee or Diet Coke if I want to write. A nice cabernet if I want to admire the pen. Amaretto when I'm trying to justify my next pen purchase. Tequila if it is a limited edition.

Coffee to revive, tea to relax. Just depends on the mood!

I will concur with Andy. Not my daily regimen, but followed at least weekly. I always prefer an adult beverage while writing in the evening, along with a cigar.

Actually a beer isn't bad. Getting a little buzzed keeps me from over thinking things. Tea isn't bad when you're sleepy.

Between 3:00 AM and 10:31 AM, Coca-Cola with enough ice to just about freeze it.

All other times, Jack Daniel's with a little club soda and lots of ice.

Yes, but the quantity of caffeine is so much less.

I like a glass of nice red wine...but just one, or my writing tends to go a bit haywire...it's OK when I'm typing, as editing is so much easier & tidier smile.gif

But also tea, or coffee, or even water..... definitely not 'pop'
MinasTirithScribe
Tea (black tea unless it is after suppertime, in which case, herbal). When I telecommute (1-3 days a week depending on weather and work flow) I brew a quart pot of tea first thing in the morning and sip on it all day. My current favorite is from a low-altitude region of Sri Lanka, and I can't spell or pronounce the tea garden's name.

When I go into the office I drink various English Breakfast-type blends all day, whatever has been brought in from our other site in the UK. Twinings Black Currant if I'm having a bad day and need comfort.

When journaling in a cafe (not often anymore) I may get chai or decaf hazelnut coffee or something else depending on time of day, weather, and mood.
Paddler
Coffee, tea, (iced or hot, depending on the weather) or hot chocolate.

No alcohol. The buzz is just aggravating when I'm trying to do something else.

I might start off in the morning with a latte on my desk, but as my writing progresses I generally drink nothing at all, being too engrossed to think of anything liquid.

You've been out of Andalucía, haven't you? I like yerba with cold water (tereré), but have a hard time finding it in my area. Is it available in Andalucía?

I'm 100% Andalusian, with Irish ancestors, which is rare here. No, I've never been to Argentina, Uruguay, Chile or Brazil which is where yerba mate is mostly had. I have some Argentinian and Uruguayan friends living here in Spain. I think that the ritual of sharing mate fits the Andalusian way of life with its ancient muslim past.

It's easily found here, although my favorite brand (Canarias) is a bit harder to find. It's an acquired taste; most people think I'm pulling their legs when they try it for the first time.

Here you have another mate; this time it's a leather wrapped one with german silver bombilla. Pocket moleskine and Omas Milord (old style).

Hi Jon; I've tried to like tereré, but I still prefer it hot. I've tried some experiments: orange or lemon peel, coffee beans, fresh mint... only to discover that I like it neat: just hot water and yerba.

Anyway, I know I'll give tereré some more tries; I have a guampa (a cup made of a bull's horn) which is mostly associated with tereré.

Winter: hot tea, brewed coffee, latte, hot chocolate
Summer: iced tea, coffee frapps, diet Dr. Pepper choked with ice, cola slushes, Italian soda (cherry or blackberry)

Starbucks: Iced green tea lemonade
Tim Hortons: Iced Cappuccino, or large Double-Double

Cheers,
A.J.

Yerba Mate Juan... nice pics smile.gif

Mornings I will drink either a 30 aged Ti Guan Yin, Baozhong or a high mountain Taiwan Oolong.
Evenings, without hesitation, it's a dirty vodka martini.
satrap
6-8 shots espresso on ice w/toffee flavouring, cream.

For me, probably one of red wine, scotch, or cognac, depending on mood and occasion. Earlier in the day, probably water or nothing. smile.gif
CharlieB
Mornings: coffee and orange juice

Afternoons: coffee or water on weekdays, beer on weekends

Early evening: wine, usually red, but sometimes white or rose, especially in summer

Late evening: single malt scotch, small batch bourbon, or armagnac

Yes, I can drink and write.....
dvorak
A cool, but not cold, pint of homebrew out of the keg, at least after 10 am. Before then, diet coke...

Las Canarias is my maté of choice. I have it every noontime. thumbup.gif
I usually just use a coffee press to steep it and then bring it, in a thermos, to work.

I've always admired people who can. Not I. I have to be stone-cold sober to write.

I drink two lattes, + vanilla flavoring, every morning during writing hours. On deadline, I drink a ridiculous number of lattes.

Canarias is the best yerba I've tried, and I've tried a few dozen brands. I make yerba mate sipping a liturgy that makes chinoyu (Japanese tea ceremony) look like a lipton teabag.

I'm also wondering where beer is. But actually my favorite drink while writing is red wine.

Actually it's my favorite drink while doing pretty much anything.

Coco "always admired who can (drink and) write. Not I." Same here.

I drink iced tea, preferably strong tea so that it doesn't get weak when served with ice. Also plenty of lemon or lime. Caffeine in in iced tea has just enough of a kick to it that I stay alert. Lemon or lime adds its own kick for the taste buds.

While at work? Coffee in the mornings. Coke in the afternoons.

In the evening? I got a very, very nice bottle of saki from my brother in Japan. I have a very small amount of it while writing.
ilovemyducatis
I like to have a latte or cappuccino while writing. I have a great little Bialetti stove top espresso machine. I think I associate warm drinks with writing-tea, hot chocolate or coffee.

Tea for me...

Green....

Sencha
Genmaicha

Jasmine Dragon Tears

Hot or cold... Depending on the climate and my mood.

Occasionally chai.

I love sencha and genmaicha; Have you tried bancha or kukicha? (kukicha is not green though). Then I also love white teas.

In the morning, post breakfast: black coffee
11 am onwards: tea (Earl Grey, black)
Late afternoon: tea, or sherry...
Early evening: red wine
Late evening: Stolichnaya vodka, ice-cold and neat, or a single malt

But I would like to point out that I do not rigorously follow this routine day in, day out - this is a general guide if I happen to have a drink when I pick up a pen! (I do however always observe elevenses.)

tea - green, white, black
water
hot cocoa

Have you tried oolong tea? I find that I drink it a lot because black tea I find a little too potent and green tea a little bland for morning drinks. I also really enjoy white tea- I make a big pot of it and usually drink the whole thing through a couple hours of homework or writing.

Gin (brand irrelevant)

John

To him remarked his fiancée
As he was set to go away,
“Whatever peril you are in
Swear you won’t resort to gin”.
Once he arrived in regions far
He went to visit the bazaar.
Against the fearful native din
He thought to take a sip of gin,
When he, arrayed in khaki pants,
Would go out hunting elephants.
The sun would make his head spin,
He took a thermos full of gin
As fierce uprisings were put down.
Time after time inside the town
He celebrated every win
By toasting all his troops in gin.
He mumbled “I’m awfully tired”,
Then shortly after he expired,
But not before one last tin
Of something that was labelled gin.
His fiancée came with a wreath
Where he was laid six feet beneath,
Abandoned by his kith and kin
Because he had succumbed to gin.
