Full Version: I loves my Sheaffer Tuckies!

I just bought this one from Nate and inked it with Pilot's Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo (moonlight) ink. It's a fine nib with a slight italic... ness to it, so I'm still finding the sweet spot, but I loves the Tuckies!

The one on the left is inked with Skrip Red; the one on the right has the Tsuki-yo.

I am officially a Sheaffer FanGirl.

Saw these on flickr, you are one of my contacts there, and love them. Great composition and bags of sharpness. The bokeh is good too.

Cheers,
Sean

Thanks, Sean!

If I hadn't been too lazy, I'd have gotten out the tripod to avoid that dark reflection in the nib, make the Tsuki-yo stand out more (first pic). Next time!

I just got to play with this very pen, as Ethernautrix and I (and Deirdre) had a pen get-together, and I will say that I was very impressed with the pen. I haven't any Sheaffers, and might consider getting one (but Deirdre's collection has convinced me to go Stipula titanium 22). The tuckaway clip is adorable.

Hello:

I want one! Nate? Who? Where? How much?.

Where can I find these pens and Pilotīs ink?

Pretty pics, thanks.

Jorge.

Nice fountain pen indeed!

Nice pens Ethernautix.
ethernautrix
Ah, thanks, jorgerp1, Fountain Pen Club, and Georges!

Jorgerpl1, I posted in Wanted to Buy that I wanted a Sheaffer Tuckaway. I hadn't ever seen one, except on-line, and Karl responded that he happened to have one (it's the one on the left in the photo of two Tuckies), and it is an AMAZING pen. Karl's not a dealer -- he collects and restores fountain pens as a hobby -- so I don't feel comfortable suggesting you contact him.

BUT! I think you should post in Wanted to Buy. Someone's bound to have a Tucky he can sell you. And if Karl responds... I say go for it. Cos he did a marvelous job restoring this Tucky. (I'd bought a Sheaffer Lifetime Balance from him (he'd posted in For Sale), and it is another one of my Sheaffer favorites!)

Sheaffer nibs are amongst the most beautiful there are, as well as instantly recognizable

Great pictures, I just love the triumph nibs and I was busy looking at some Tuckys at the Midlands Pen Show at the weekend.

Ethernautrix, any way you could post pictures of the entire pens? I'd like to see the whole enchilada...

Why, I'd be glad to, Doug C.

Here they are nestled between a Connaisseur and a Crest Laque:

And here they are leaning against each other and a juice glass of cheap Chianti:

And here's one getting his head dunked into a more appropriate juice...

I know, that isn't a full shot, but I like it.

I love these as well. I have been talking about getting into vintage pens (I have about 6) and this might be one to add to the list. I especially love the clip. Is that a military style clip?
Clydesdave
Nice work on the photographs Ethernautrix. I like the way you think.
ethernautrix
Yes, that's the military clip. (I think it is SO CUTE!)

Thanks, Clydesdave! Nice of you to say so!
SMG
ethernautrix, I have some good news for you. I may have found a plunger rod at home which will work. smile.gif Will let you know later tonight.

Cheers,

Lisa, between the two of us we've got the 4 more common colors of the TD Sentinel Tuckies! The only one missing is brown!
(I have a burgundy and a blue).

Great pens Ethernautrix. I am a fan of anything with a Triumph nib.

But one point of clarification - the tucky clip is not a military clip. Military regs required the pen to sit entirely below the line of the pocket, and the tucky clip pokes up too high. See - Military Clips at RichardsPens.com.

And if you don't - remember that Francis Goosens (Fountainbel) makes them to size for $8 a pop (plus $2 shipping, last I checked).

Doug C, I have new information! That is not, I repeat NOT a military-style clip!

Thank you, Johnny Appleseed, for the information!

Hi, Sean! Thanks!

Now I have a coupla questions. What's the difference (if any) between Sentinels and Triumphs? Cos Pep mentions Sentinels and everyone else is saying Triumph, and I thought these were Triumphs... and now I feel like I don't know anything....

Also! Someone asked me via PM about repairing Touchdowns versus Plungers. Um... I think Sean is restoring a... plunger? Sean? No? I don't know.

I got one of the Tuckies and a Lifetime Balance from Karl, who is not a dealer but a hobbyist, and those are my favorite vintage pens (and he'd restored them), but I don't know if I should recommend him, since he might not want the attention.

Sean's working on restoring a Sheaffer Tucky... but the person asking for local (?) recommendations is in Washington state.

I don't know who else restores Sheaffers. Does Ryan? He probably does, but I am totally guessing. (He has a sweet lil' Sheaffer in the marketplace that so far I have been able to resist, but it's taking A LOT of will power.)

So... if anyone has a favorite Tucky touchdown restorer, would you mind letting me know, either here or via PM? Thank you in advance!

Triumph is the name of the nib, and also of any of the original line of pens that had Triumph nibs. A Sentinal is a specific model with a Triumph nib, polished SS cap, and plastic barrel. So if these were vac fillers I think you could call them a Triumph Sentinal Tuckaway.

As touchdowns, I think their official designation would be Touchdown Sentinal Tuckaway - but the nib is still a Triumph nib.

There are no professional pen repair people in Washington State that I am aware of. There are some local amateurs like myself that might do a repair for a friend or two, but I don't think anyone has hung out a shingle.

Micheal McNiel, who posts here (I think as his name?) is in Portland and is about the closest I know of - Northwest Penworks. But nearly any pen repair person can do a Touchdown - Penhero Pen Repair list.

I'm not a vintage guy, so it doesnt bother me. All I know if that it is a cool clip. This is the kind of thing that Sheaffer should have brought back before they decided to move overseas.

I believe "Triumph" refers to the type of nib design - that wraparound one with the upturned pointy tip.

The TD Tuckies with the squiggly line engraved metal caps are identified as Sentinel Tuckies AFAIK.
ku5165
very nice pen and pictures....i love it when the inks out on the nib...adds more definition or something like that
El Mocho
It's pictures like these that helped cement my fascination with the Triumph and Tuckaway, though my love's extending to vintage Sheaffers of all sorts. It looks better than my effort:

Did you use any sort of reflectors or just natural light?

Beautiful shots with great light. I particularly like the first one. Do you mind if I ask how you suspended the pen above the page? Holding, clamping, bouncing?

My big secret... I held the pen. I'm surprised my camera lens isn't spotted with ink. Heh.
