Hello fellow sheafferites!

I need some of your expertise with a pen I recently snagged of ebay. I was on a bit of a "tiny pen thing", when I got the winning bid on this pen:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/firstpancake/2533275638/" title="sheaffer ring top by First_Pancake, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2350/2533275638_15a90a1c69.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="sheaffer ring top" /></a>

judging by the imprint on the barrel just behind the section, it's a sheaffer's, but it has a cater's nib.
I was curious to know,
what sort of pen is it, and how old?
how do I find out what sort of material the overlay is made of?
what is a proper nib for this pen?
and how do I take it apart? the sac is crunchy and needs to be replaced.

and advice would be fantastic.

cheers,
Steph

ps: this pen is 9.5cm long when capped

Gold filled most likely. late teens-mid twenties more or less. The Carter nib likely is worth about same as early Sheaffer "self filler #2" nib so not too much worries there. Separates between feed n' barrel as do many pens.
