Hi all, my friend's collegue came to me the other day and showed me this pen, it's a Montblanc 75th Anniversary le grand 162 rollerball, the limited to 75 pieces edition (22/75), made of solid 18k white gold with rose gold, 2 rings of dimonds. it appears to be in mint condition as the person claimed that it was never used and safety box kept. Unfortunately the original box/packaging was stolen some years back while this pen was stored in bank's safety deposit box.

The person is looking to sell the pen, he said the pen retailed for about $12,000 back in 1999 (which i think is believable considering the current non-special edition yellow/white gold braided version retails for $13000 at this day), he wanted me to throw offers at him. i am interested but have no idea how much this pen is current worth now . I tried to search for more information about this pen online but all i could find was this website had the pen listed for sale but was sold. I inquired about an estimated price for this pen but never heard back for weeks. http://www.penopoly.com/montblanc_pens.html

If anyone knows more about this pen, such as its current value/market price and jsut anything, and how much do u think would be a fair price for me to buy this pen from the person ( it should be less valuable w/o the original box and packaging) i'd really appreciate any comments. Thanks!

that is hard to say, i would properly call airline international to see how much they sell it brand new if they have it and go from there.

do you know how much he pay for it? most MB sold through dealers have some discount in them, 20% on average.
are you getting the pen for collecting value so you can sell it later? Or you are going to keep it? Without the box does some what decrease the value a little, but given how much MB is selling their solid gold pens right now I think it balance out.
Another resource you can use is to email MB itself, few years ago I got a catalog of Limited edition pens, mainly Writer Series and Patron of the Art series, it list how much some of those pen were sold at a auction house along with the MSRP at that time.

If your friend paid 12000 for it I would offer 10k~11k given that it is a roller ball. Fountain pen generally worth more because that is what most people collect.

Thanks for your response. Since this pen is 1999 limited edition, there's probably nowhere that still has it for sale brand new. I think contacting MB is a great idea and i'll see what they can tell me about this pen.

paying $10K~11K?? I was thinking on the lines of 4k - 5k... there's not THAT much gold to make it worth over 10 grand and there are too many variations of 75 yrs serie so this limited edition isn't all that popular among collectors.

i'm actually considering in buying it for my own use, probably as a daily pen as I curently have a 162 in bordeaux with me everywhere i go and i enjoy writing with it.

I think your offer is more than fair. I would love to have the pen too, but would probably be thinking more in the $3500.00 to $4200.00 range.

$10 - $11k !!!!! Miles off with that estimation and yes I do buy that type of high end pen.

No more than £1800. The fact that it is not a fountain pen reduces its appeal greatly.

Oh and as a footnote if your friends box and papers were taken whilst stored in a safe deposit box he has a claim with whichever bank he was with at the time.

Unless the pen was in a safe-deposit box and the box and papers were at home and stolen there, in which case the owner lucked out.. smile.gif

sorry i should've clarified that... yes indeed were two separate events there, the box /packaging was stolen from home(break-in) whilst the pen was stored in the bank's safety box.

I really appreciate all of your inputs here, thank you all!

i'd totally buy it for ~1800 quid but i do feel that may be somewhat lowball? maybe i'm being too generous here, but i'd tracked a few Sterling pinstipe solitare 162's (le grand rollerball, non special edition) and they sold for no less than $900ish on ebay (a couple ended at $1200). It is a solid white gold barrel pen, maybe i'm thinking too much, lol

Dont let your heart rule your head (ok ..who hasnt in the pen buying world !!) mate....... but if you really want it and intend to make it a treasured purchase you go for it. Done it myself and whoever says they have not on here is probably fibbing.

Regards

Ian
