I enjoyed the great last lines and first sentences. Let's hear some worthy dialog from your own pen or others'.

Here is one:

His father said, "Cannonballs have no conscience, nor do the people who fire them."

Like a visiting doctor, the son replied in an even tone, "And no amount of prayer will break the chains of tyranny."

Great topic! Here are two off the top of my head:

First line: "Ships at a distance have every man's wish on board."
Last line: "She called in her soul to come and see."

First line: "I awake . . . the touch of that cold object against my pen* awakens me."
Last line: "I will die."

*Had to word-substitute; the board wouldn't allow the actual word. Oops... smile.gif

TROILUS: This is the monstruosity in love, lady, that the will is infinite and the execution confined; that the desire is boundless and the act a slave to limit.

Morningstar: Good morning, Jack?
Jack: Morning?
Morningstar: Almost. It's always almost morning.

A short extract from a story I wrote some years ago ...

BuG 3 whirred away for a little while .. Then a little while longer ….. then a lot longer……. and just when they thought that something had gone wrong and that he would have to be taken back to Big Uncle G to be fixed, BuG 3 stopped whirring, and said “Je mon fou!” and started whirring again. Anna and her mother looked at each other.
They were both biting their bottom lips.

“What language was that Mum?” asked Anna.

“I think it was French.” Said Anna’s mother.

“What did he say Mum?” asked Anna.

“I haven’t a clue.” Said Anna’s mother.

BuG 3 kept on whirring. Then he stopped. Then he started whirring again. Only this time a lot louder. (Anna and her mother held their hands over their ears it was that loud.) Then BuG 3 stopped whirring again and was silent. The silence was deafening! Anna and her mother slowly took their hands away in case he suddenly started again.

“ . ” said BuG 3.

“What language was that?” asked Anna’s mother.

“Haven’t a clue.” Said Anna. “I thought he burped.”

“Don’t be silly!” said Anna’s mother, “Machines can’t burp! … Can they?”

“Well this one might!” said Anna.

Suddenly BuG 3 started whirring again. “Bore Da!” said BuG 3, “Dim Parcio!”

“Bore Da?” said Anna, and then she whispered sideways to her mother, “It’s Ok Mum He’s speaking Welsh now. We learn it in school. Hang on and I’ll try to find out what’s wrong with him.”

“Bore Da! BuG 3.” said Anna in the way she was taught in school, and then she stopped suddenly, and then she whispered sideways again “ Umm ….. I’m sorry Mum but I don’t know enough Welsh to ask him.”

And her mother answered her, whispering sideways, “Well try English then.”

“Bore Da! BuG 3.” Said Anna brightly “Umm… What the flip is wrong with you?”

This is some favorite dialog from a movie, Hard Times starring Charles Bronson and James Coburn. Interestingly, they are all delivered not by the stars, but by Struther Martin. smile.gif

Poe: I have two years of medical school to recommend me.
Chaney: Two years don't make a doctor.
Poe: During my third year, a small black cloud appeared on campus; I left under it.
Speed: What he means is that he is a bona-fide hophead.
Poe: I have a weakness for opium.
Chaney: That's a hard habit to break.
Poe: Some are born to fail, others have failure thrust upon them.

also...

Poe: Thick skin. I would wager you are not what our friend Speed refers to as, with an unfortunate turn of phrase, a "bleeder."

A last line:

AEH: "How lucky to find myself standing on this empty shore, with the indifferent waters at my feet."
