Full Version: Few questions to those who love Snorkels

Sheaffer Snorkel is my main collection theme as I stated many times.
I might be in love with MB and look all the time for LE and Oversize pens but quietly I keep buying more Snorkels and every model I add the happier I get.
I know what the magic of this pen is (for me anyways).Since I started collecting pens I was in love with the little tube that sticks out the feed and the very simple and elegant design of this pen.
A rare PFM is great but even a common black Snorkel will excite me more.

After aquiering all the colours produced I keep adding different models I dont have and as we all know this might take me a life time to succeed so I have a wonderful way ahead of me.

So I really want to know how many snorkel you guys have ?
What is your favorite colour ?
What is your favorite Snorkel nib style ?
Do you collect Snorkels or just bought few and use them ?
How do you like these pens as users ?

I probably possess 100 Snorks at the moment. 6-8 or so in my collection. The rest... well... you know.

Ahhh... favorite color? Darned if i know. I respect Bruce Speary's comments on Stylophilesonline, that sometimes we start to like colors just because they are scarce or have cachet in pendom, conflating our pure aesthetic sense with "collector cachet". Of course some of collector cachet can stem from the oh -so-subjective aesthetic view too.

That said, i like the scarce bright colors. Go figure. Peacock and Fiesta charm. Mandarin.... well Orange and I go way back. That i have a rather scarce full Fiesta has pulled me in that direction of late. Idunno. Possibly no favorite color. Though i am feeling the pull of orange...

Nib style? Triumph.

I like the pens as users. They tend to be quite smooth, "out of the box". A bit thin for me though, which is why i have used PFM for years, less so TM Snorks.

I collect to some degree about everything. I doubt my snork hoard ever will top ten pens in my own collection, but i do have the few that i like.

Amir;

Well, I collect "Sheaffer 1912-1941 and snorkels" so I specifically define them as in my collection. I have about 57 of them (not counting several desk pens) and the favorite color is peacock blue. I was using two statesmans for the longest time (now on a targa I bought new, brushed stainless steel in 1983 and a Parker 45 of all things).

About a dozen at last count. My favorite color is probably black -- I'm a fairly pedestrian sorta guy -- my favorite model is the Valient, and the nib really must be a fine or a Gregg, Triumph, either PdAg or gold, both are nice.

I try to use all my pens, I don't "collect them just to have them", so I really don't care about the colors. The bright ones are pretty, but not something I want to use every day, too distracting. Hence my preference for black and burgundy.

The Triumph Snorkel is my favorite pen overall. I love the understated elegance of design, accessible size, and quality of engineering. I have 8, all of them in the pedestrian colors like Pastel Blue, Green, Black, and Burgundy. The "holy grail" of my Snork collection is a Canadian Autograph that is near mint (still with chalk marks). I don't use that one, for obvious reasons, and I feel bad about that because I feel like these pens should be used above all - and this pen is also a great writer.

My favorite writer among them is a pastel green factory stub that lays down a great ribbon of ink with excellent feedback. A Sentinel with an F nib is another favorite. I just love the look and the feel of these pens!

I wish they had made the Snorkel in Persian Blue. The TM Touchdown Persian Blue is my favorite color in the TM line. If only they had made a purple. smile.gif

One day I might go on to collecting the rare colors, but I would almost feel dirty doing it because I think the spirit of this pen is its no-bling quality, which defies museum logic.

Love your Snork collection, goodguy!

Best,
Summer Greer

As someone who has just started collecting pens, I have decided to concentrate exclusively on Snorkels (4 so far - Valiant, Statesman, Saratoga and a Special). I plan to collect all the models first and then concentrate on the technical aspects of these wonderful writing instruments.

I must say that Triumph is my favourite nib style. I regularly use a Statesman with a Fine nib and absolutely love the firm, smooth and fine line. I like the Open nib style also but it does not have the same character and feel as the triumph nibs.

As for colors, I love Black just because it goes well with every other color you might have on your person and is a traditional pen color. I plan to actually use all my snorkels in rotation unless they are mint and I decide to preserve them for posterity.

As a user, I think Snorkels are a class apart. Everything about it (Technology, nib and build quality) is simply outstanding.

Thank you for the kind words and if you ever decide to sell your Autograph let me know cloud9.gif

Is no one else bothered by the paltry ink supply? It is a great design, etc., but I've never been able to use one because I can't get through a normal work day with anything bigger than an extra fine nib.

I only have one but it's on rotation: a Snorkel Crest with factory stub nib.

I read in Frank's "Da Book" that the Snorkel wrote more words than a Parker Vac, Duofold, or 61. Of course, it would not write as many as a Pelikan with it's larger ink supply.

Some Snorkels has the seal drying out.The filling mechanism still fills up ink but not all the way due to air leak so you really dont get all the ink supply you should.Maybe this is the problem with your Snorkel.

A snorkel in good condition should hold quite a bit of ink and be good for at least a day. Nothing wrong with a good snork!

I'm not wholly convinced of this. Used to yell at Frank about it over lunch at the pen shows. He was...stubborn wink.gif

I have seven snorkels, 6 working and one in need of repair. I fell in love with this pen and I use them everyday.

I love them "just because" they are cute, and I love showing people how to fill them clap1.gif

Like Martius, first I want to have a different model of all of them and then maybe look for more expensive and rare colors... (but my wife caught me the other day watching a buckskin, the pink one and I feel she would love to have one bunny01.gif )

I would like to see more pictures of snorkels. puddle.gif

David, I have seen your website and you have very nice pens, some day you will have a customer here... keep a couple of snorkels for me, please.
