Never heard of the place? You're in good company. It's one of England's least-known counties but considered by many to be somewhat of a hidden gem. Rather like FPs, really. On the map of England it's just below the centre.

I got interested in lettering back in the mid-1950s. I was in the Royal Navy at the time, and a group of us went to Dublin for a Rugby match. We were told that there were two world-class things in Dublin, Guinness and the Book of Kells. We tried both. I developed a lifelong admiration for both. Ended up here.

In between then and now (I'll omit the Guinness bit, stick to the lettering bit) I bought a copy of Johnston's "Writing & Illuminating & Lettering" and cut a few goose quills and tried some lettering and decided I had a way to go before I could go professional. Stuck to my last instead (electronics). Bought a Swan Calligraph with italic nib and decided cursive italic was more my scene - with a bit of help from Tom Gourdie. That pen lasted many a year before it vanished down the back of somewhere and was not replaced until the next millenium.

Fast forward to a bit less than a decade or so ago and I discovered ACPP. Am I allowed to mention it here?rolleyes.gif I mainly lurked there, but came across some wonderful characters; Satrap of orange delight; the late, much missed, always opinionated (but what marvelous opinions!), Frank Da Book; Karen Traviss and Ada Ma; Tony Stanford just down the road at Bedford; and many more. Without Frank it never seemed to recover.

Recently, while Googling, I found this board. Onwards and upwards!

My pens? Well, I'm back with some nice italic jobs to replace the Swan. To start with I managed to get my hands on a couple of Parker 51s with italic nibs, one of them ground by Tony Stanford. Very nice it is, too, and in regular use. Marvelous it was, too, to remind myself how much more I enjoy writing with an italic nib again. I'm also fascinated by Sheaffer Touchdowns and Snorkels. They always seem to have wonderfully smooth nibs, even after 40 to 50 years. Sadly, italic nibbed versions seem to be be rarer than hens' teeth. My few Sheaffers have stock ball tips, so they don't get used nearly as much as they deserve. They are handy, though, if someone else wants to borrow a pen and they're not comfortable with an italic.

Then, following a post on ACPP, I ordered a Mottishaw cursive italic M800. Not cheap but worth every penny. It writes like silk! It certainly flatters my hand. Since then I've added a couple more Pelikans from him, a Grand Place M620 City Series with a relatively fine italic nib which I use for editing, and a Chicago M620 with medium italic nib which rotates with the M800 and P51. Now, if only I could find a City Series San Francisco (dreams...) And why on earth am I knocking this out on a keyboard, for heavens' sake?

Hi there, Tom and welcome aboard. This forum is as great as your own collective habits. Ask a lot of questions an you'll get a lot of answers. Exactly where you live is indeed a location I'm not familiar with. All I know from visits is Oxford, Cambridge and Nottingham...

Best wishes, Mike

Welcome to FPN! It sounds like you have a pretty good collection and experience.

Hello and welcome to the forum. I lived in Kettering for a short while myself, but mostly my trips to Northamptonshire seem to be limited to the A43 heading in the general direction of Silverstone.

Hi Tom and welcome to the forum. You have a nice collection of pens, and I am sure that collection will grow dramatically once you start looking around on this site.

You live in a lovely part of the country, much nicer than where I live just outside of London. I often visit relatives just down the road to you in Wellingborough, so I know it well.

Enjoy your collection and let us all know as you increase it in size

I know it well. My wife's parents lived in Stanion when I first met her, they now live in Kettering. Her two aunts live in Burton Latimer and Barton Seagrave. When we first got married we lived in Brigstock. All pleasant little Northamptonshire villages.

Me, I came from the huge great thorn of the rose of shires. I'm sure you know where that dump of a town is as its not more the 8 miles from Kettering. Luckily I haven't had to step foot in the place for the last 10 years since my Mum died and haven't lived they for over 30 years.

Welcome ex-fish head from an ex-crab living in one of the more southern shires!

Sounds like you'll be right at home here and already have some great pens. I've long had a fancy for the Pelikan Chicago (I think the most attractive of the City Series) but you'll find quite a few here who covet the San Francisco.

Welcome to FPN, Tom!!! smile.gif
Looks like you already have a great collection of pens. I too have a few Pelikans ( 3 M-1000s) purchased from John Mottishaw, and they write like a dream.

It certainly looks very lively - rather overwhelmingly so! The friendliness is immediately apparent.

Roughly, we're in the centre of the triangle between Oxford, Cambridge, and Nottingham.

Both Ann and I lived in Cambridge for some time when we were (much!) younger. There used to be an excellent pen department in Heffers book and stationery store there. Sadly this, like so many pen departments, has now vanished I believe, though Heffers still have large book and music departments.

Thanks Erick. In the past I have seen my pens more as a set of tools than as a collection. However, if a Pelikan M620 San Francisco came up I would succumb to its charms and think about how I would use it later. Narrow nib for editng? Distinctive colour ink for differentiating? Wide nib for headings?

Aren't dreams wonderful?

Best wishes

Grow my collection? There's something about expenditure exceeding income which just doesn't appeal... However, if a Pelikan City Series San Francisco turns up I guess drastic fiscal measures might be called for. ohmy.gif

Maybe so, but you just have to go a few miles East to the Essex/Suffolk border and you're in countryside to match anything here in Northants, and you have the sea as well. We just have the low, slow Nene here.

Welcome buddy,

Active member of the R-R.E.C. and had a few events in Northamptonshire. Althorp was a favourite of mine before Dianas demise.

Our club HQ is in a lovely place called Paulerspury and I did spend a bit of time down there helping with restoration of the property.

Anyway good bunch on here and a wealth of experience you can tap into if you need anything.

Regards

Ian.
