Hello, everyone!
I'm Stevopedia. I was recently introduced to fountain pens, at the tender age of seventeen, by a very good friend of mine (the very one who game me my nickname of Stevopedia, in fact) who was "turned on" to fountain pens by a good friend of theirs. My friend and I are both on the very edge of--and eagerly awaiting!--the purchase of our very first fountain pens: me, a Lamy Al-Star (along with a converter and a bottle of Noodler's Black), and her, a Sensa Meridian.
Also, I have a question for you: As a beginner who knows next to nothing (except what I've read here on FPN for the last week), should I get the M or F nib with my Al-Star?
A bit more about me: I attend the Science and Math Academy in Aberdeen, Maryland (an absolutely amazing high school). I actively participate in slam poetry and hope to get involved in my school's drama productions next year. I absolutely adore music, all types. I caught the photography bug (of the film persuasion) about a year ago when I started to use my father's Pentax K1000 in a photography class in school, and hope to have my own darkroom soon (and yes, I do have my eyes on a DSLR too.) I will be moving to the Greenville, SC area after I graduate next summer. I plan on/hope to attend Clemson University and major in electrical and computer engineering.
Hopefully my photography and pen interests won't clash and/or bleed my bank account dry... >_<

Hi there and welcome aboard.
To answer your question, all you need to do is try out an F and M nib and see what you loke best.
This applies to many nibs, even for one and the same pen model. The more differences the better meaning that there is somehow a great deal of "craftmanship" present and this is to be seen in different samples /specimens of one and the same pen-model-nib. Don't buy anything without first having had a wet run!!
All the best... Mike

Welcome Stevodpedia!!
I'm glad that you've found FPN and the amazing world of fountian pens. I like the enthusiasm that I think I hear in your voice. Best of luck with your endeavors, and you're going to love having a darkroom. It's a fabulous experience. I spent untold hours at a time in my homemade basement darkroom when I was your age.
I hope you enjoy your new pen when it arrives. I'm sure it will be only the first of many to come.
cheers,
Clancy

Well, science and math... clearly you should get a F nib.
Stevopedia, is that cos you're a data junkie? (I.e., a walking encyclopedia.)
Welcome to the FPN!
P.S. I'm biased towards F and EF nibs.

Yup. According to my friend, I know everything. I wish that were true...
Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. I've decided on the F nib, and hope to place my order at Pear Tree Pens by Sunday...
