I know, I know. It's overloaded, we're too big a forum, etc.

So I'm just griping and writing this as a warning. If you type a long post, be sure to copy it to your clipboard before clicking on the "Post New Topic" button.

Else you'll lose everything including your temper. Ming is curled up in a little (okay, big and furry) ball because mommakat used some strong and loud language and a fist to the table when her post was lost.

It doesn't work to go back - because going back just takes me to the same "page not found" page.

This is a warning to those of you composing long posts or PMs (I've lost one of each today) and not a gripe to the admins and IT gurus working behind the scenes.

(clicks Ctrl-C)

You are so right! I discovered the necessity of copying long posts a while back - as insurance in case said post disappears.

Probably outdated terminology for some. Just select all your text the click Ctrl-C. Then if you lose your post, you can just ctrl-v into your next attempt (or past it into notepad or something to save it until the system is behaving again.)

I did not know that. Thanks for the tip. (I looked and looked for an icon for a clipboard headsmack.gif ) and wrote it down.

In Firefox 2.14, I just hit "back" and it's all still there. When the forum comes back on line, try again. Or copy it to a file then, before Vista crashes and does loose the text.

There is an extension for saving this automatically, but I never got it to work. The built-in behavior in FF 2.x is just fine enough.

On the occasion when I do get a page that is "back" hostile because it's a redirect pass through, using the drop-down back to skip that one does the trick.

So you might consider upgrading to Firefox. I've had no loss due to the forum going down -- I can just wait it out with no extra work or pre-planning.

If when you go "back" it actually goes back, you can sometimes salvage it. When you go "back" and it gives you the same ugly error page, as was happening on that day, you are SOL. smile.gif

I have always wanted to try Firefox but this is a shared resource and The Man Who Owns The Place uses Windows everywhere and while he hates Windows he doesn't want to have to change becuase he is also The Man Who Doesn't Like Change. Fortunately, he is The Man Who Doesn't Read FPN, too. thumbup.gif

oh - No Vista here. And we dread the day when it happens.

Firefox runs on Windows. You can install and use FF and let him continue to use IE. Big deal. Are you logging on to the same desktop account or separate? If the same, just tell it not to make FF the default browser. He'll never know or care.
