Hi all,

Following the topic on the new leather Sailor for 2008, I also found the socalled Arita:

http://www.sailor.co.jp/BUNGU/SP_arita/index.html

which seems to be made of porcelain and available in six 'finishes'.

And these:

which seem to resemble in form and size the King of Pen.

Not quite my taste, but very special indeed!

best regards,

Actually, the Arita and Hanaisho series came out mid-last year I think... they have been out for awhile.

I would *love* the green porcelain one... smile.gif

Wow! I didn't know about these either. They look fantastic! Anybody know where one might get one and how much they cost?

A lot! Retail is roughly ~$2600.

I'm very drawn to the Octopus pen. It fits in my "marine-themed" collection.

I've seen them in person in stores in Japan. They are BIG pens, and knowing that I'm a klutz, I didn't dear ask them to take it out of the glass cases biggrin.gif

I saw them last Ausgust in the Washington DC pen show. Somehow they left the impression they were not that big, in nay case when compared to the bamboo pens. In Europe, Andy's pens seems to offer these, without pictures though. I would ask Cyberpens if they offer these. The porcelain pens are not in a Sailor catalogue I got recently.

Taki: is porcelain commonly made in Japan? Would you know if these pens are actually made in Japan, or elsewhere?

While they are gorgeous looking, will these contend with MB's precious resin Meisterstucks as the most shatterable pens in existence?

Not at those prices (approx $2500 US) - what are they trying to compete with Montblanc? Gasp!!!

I agree that the porcelain pens are aesthetically very pleasing. I am especially drawn to the very traditional white with blue designs. But porcelain is just not a pen material for me, in much the same way I dislike all metal pens. Hence, even if I could afford such an indulgence, I would not buy one.

You do realize that Sailor has pens that cost a great deal more than $2500?

The King Cobra was an example.

Arita is a traditional craft, much the way maki-e is a traditional craft. I applaud Sailor for trying to take one of them to a different market.

Arita-Imari porcelain is very famous and long-lived Japanese pottery: Arita Online.

This type of porcelain is a point of pride for Japan - the pens are definitely not made elsewhere. I believe our member "chibimie" visited Arita last year, and collects or has a strong interest in this type of porcelain.

In fact, some time ago Stan posted pictures of a U$ 160000 Sailor pen. Unfortunately, the pictures are not there any more. Ruud

I know what you mean Frank, personally I like nice, simple Black and Gold pens.

I even surprised myself by the purchase of a blue and white porcelain pen from Hero, the 300A which came in a very nice wooden presentation box and with exceptional build quality all for $30.

I dont know that I would run to $2500 for this Sailor tho.
