Fleabay $295 BIN, Parker 51 first year DJ w/sterling cap. Not a steal, but perhaps a decent deal if original and correct. Not my cuppa, and I'm too cheap, anyway. wink.gif FWIW:

I'm no 51 pro, but vaguely recall the first year lined sterling cap should have some chevrons not mixed with the liney thingys. I don't insist.

Nice of you for the lead/links. thumbup.gif

So is the cap correct or not? Don't really care myself, just looking at a horse race on which I don't have a bet. wink.gif

I'll shoot this eve if have chance after wake up (night shifts, day sleeps, this eve dinner with El Zorno for some hands on pen repairs). My vague recollection is even the 51 book doesn't get into some of the nuances of first year vs later year lined sterling caps, though i don't recall with detail if that is so. Would not surprise me if Ernesto's site has something on it. I can show cap i believe to be first year lined style. Once awake and if time before hitting the road.

If not... then tomorrow.

I already looked. Below is Ernesto's description. Unfortunately, the matching photo is missing.

QUOTE
First Year Cap

Sterling Silver Caps with lined pattern and gold filled clips. Although this design essentially carried over into the later production pens, the chevron cap bands for First Year pens have a unique, simpler design. Several versions of these caps exist. The most common has the "Sterling Silver" imprint below the chevron band. A second version is nowhere imprinted as to metal content. A third version has the "Sterling Silver" imprint up by the clips in a rectangle box. Found with aluminum jewels. These caps were also advertised by early Parker catalogs as the "Heritage" with 14k solid gold trim.

Bingo, the less interrupted Chevrons. I don't know that all first years done gotta have 'em though.

Okay, who finally took the bait? tongue.gif

Im pretty sure that all first years did have the less chevrons. However, I had a first Q 1942 with the non-first year band. Would not be surprised if there is a later sterling first year...

This mite be the "largest" shot around now showing both sides of a "first year" sterling lined cap to show the "simple" bisected chevron of first year.

I have the information from Al Mayman's site, preserved. I can post up a picture or each the first year design, as well as a later design, if no one thinks that will cause any problems. I preserved his site, mainly for the wealth of information it had on it.

*edit* ooops... didin't see DOc I's pics... nevermind....

Smart move to preserve Al's site. By the time I realized that I wanted to do that, the site was no longer available.
