Full Version: ... as a symbol of status you've worked so hard to achieve...

I love ebay sellers who've grown too big for their boots. The following is an auction for an Omas "The Cinema" LE (which is the pearl grey celluloid embellished with a cap band with film reels on it). Auction Link Omas Cinema LE

I mean it's a nice pen but the asking price is ridiculous in my view. I love the florid and rotund description. Especially this phrase is very telling:
QUOTE
own this pen to write beautifully and / or as a symbol of the status you've worked so hard to achieve

Right, because I've worked so hard for my bucks, I am now so blind as not to realize that I could find this pen for less than half the price. roflmho.gif

I don't think the retail on that pen was over 4 digits back in the day. What's the seller thinking?

The only one worth half what's being asked is the Perchin.

I was at the Cannes film festival in 1995 (wow, 13 years ago this week) when the pen was introduced and as I recall, the price was a little over $300 U.S. delivered to the U.S.

I don't know if that was a special price offered to Festival participants, but it did not seem like an exclusive thing at the time.

I'll buy two of 'em at his asking price, but only if he includes a couple of those pairs of hand-finished artisan crystal dice in the velvet pouch. smile.gif

Then he's got 'imself a deal.

Or not.

This would have been a steal!

Introducing price in Germany was 1200 DM in 1995 which was US $ 840 back than. The price was c. 10% higher compared to the regular large celluloid fountain pen.

Now they usually sell between 300 and 400 Euros.

The pen seems somewhat underrated compared to the regular celluloid model. Even the regular pearl grey Omas gets overlooked sometimes even I think the material is just beautiful.

Purchased mine from Joon Pens, on clearance, for $550 if memory serves.

The pen is okay, but does not strike me as spectacular, even at the normal price that Michael R stated. Personally I prefer the Delta Fellini LE (the one with ivory body): The sterling filmstrip around the cap on that one makes me weak in the knees.

Sadly, this seller is not alone in his hype, and probably in his greed. Over on Pentrace, there were two short threads about eBay sellers who went much too far in their pricing and descriptions. In one instance, a seller established a completely outrageous "buy now" only price for an ordinary FP because it had a "genuine solid gold nib." In another case, a seller presented a seriously warped FP (that looked like a green banana) as "ergonomic."

But, "buyer beware." Let's not any of us be the one taken.

I totally agree. I have the regular model with HT trim (suits the celluloid better in my view), and I think it's just stunningly beautiful. I wished they had made the Cinema in HT. rolleyes.gif

Well, got mine four years ago NIB with EF nib for € 200 via ebay. Excellent pen, great nib, lightweight celluloid pleasantly warm in the hand -> worth the price. happyberet.gif

I wonder how many people would even realize that the pen was expensive. Not really a good status symbol if people you are trying to impress don't know it thumbup.gif

I liked this bit --

WE OWN ALL OF THE PENS IN OUR IMPRESSIVE COLLECTION.

I should hope so. Selling stuff you don't own is generally frowned upon.

Hmmm, THE MARK ADAM COLLECTION, sounds awfully similar to the well known Phillip Benz collection... hmm1.gif

That was a good one! roflmho.gif

Yeah, this guy might have taken a few lessons over at the Philip Benz store. roflmho.gif
