Full Version: Economical Pen Cases

I have been looking around for display/storage and travel solutions for my pens. I love the wooden boxes and trays. They are attractive and seem well made. The same is true of leather pen wallets. I am sure that at some point I will buy or make one.

However, they are very expensive. Particularly the travel cases, which are for protecting your pen in transit, not display.

So, does anyone know of any good economical solutions? Where are the felt lined ballistic nylon travel cases? Who's hiding the Plexiglas display cases? Or is pen collecting such a small niche that only the high end offerings exist?

Thanks,
Eric

I found this 7-pen plexiglas display, which is pretty nice. Outside of that, I just find hardwoods and fine leather. Oh, and converted cigar boxes, which are okay except I don't really want my pen case to have a tobacco company's name on it. smile.gif

Felt Pen wraps?> HisNibs, Pendemonium is were I got mine from or one of the other vendors.

Plastic project boxes + a little bubble wrap padding?> Office Depot, Staples, Hobby/Craft stores about 24" X 14", 3/4-1" deep?

Wooden Craft boxes>Hobby/Craft stores, unpainted, may need decoration or sanding and padding

Look at Discount stores like Marshalls, Ross Dress for Less, TJ Max for storage boxes

Look for Pen/Pencil cases at office supply stores, Walmart, Kmart/ Use Craft store Felt to pad/wrap pens for transport.

Michaels ( Art and Craft Store) had wooden pen cases ready to go at 9-20 USD

I'd check eBay for Levenger pen cases.

eBay seller wkiffin (not affiliated, but a happy customer twice) has relatively inexpensive (not cheap, but not expensive) leather pen cases for carrrying. I have a four-pen tan case, with room for 3 x 5 cards, and a 48-pen dark brown leather zip case. If you don't see what you want in his ebay store, you could do what I did, and send a question on an item he is offering, and tell him what you want. Worked for me twice.

Pendemonium has some lovely ones that aren't as expensive as other people's.

Go to http://pendemonium.com/penstorage.htm

And look for Zipper Pen Cases.

Also, if you want a wooden storage case, ebay item 290229998410 from ebay seller jfei888 (not afiliated) which is a jewelry box, can be easily converted to a pen cabinet, with felted plastic pen trays from Gary Lehrer here for a total investment well under $60, with storage for a LOT of pens. I am not affiliated with the ebay seller, or Gary, but have been a satisfied customer of both, and converted a jewelry box for my own pens.

I have the trays from Gary; I was considering converting a solid wood tool chest.

This one, perhaps.

Thanks for some great suggestions, everyone.

Wow, that's a really nice case. I was actually considering converting an old (smaller) jewelry box that I have here into a case for the small amount of pens I have now. But for that price, I might have to reconsider.

I did a blogpost on this back in December, and thus far, I've been really happy with the results. Check the archives for it. (I'm feeling too lazy to dig up the post tonight...) smile.gif

That one would look very nice !

for traveling i would reccomend something like this. I use mine for cigars as what it is intended for and if a fragile dried out leaf can make it through baggage handling without being destroyed i think a pen will be fine.

And you get them where?

they sell them in most cigar stores. You can find bigger ones on ebay. Type in "travel humidor" and there should be plenty of different ones to choose from. some are water tight so the air pressure inside them wont change.

here is a good one i would reccomend. http://cgi.ebay.com/Cigar-Caddy-15-Cigar-T...1QQcmdZViewItem

there ARE foam inserts included. stacked in 3 levels. Here is a picture of my personal box loaded with pens.

Muji, certainly in the UK, sell these Acrylic 3 drawer boxes which works well. There's a 5 drawer version as well.

I ended up getting a decent pen case for my desk from Michael's Crafts for $9 on clearance.

Now to figure out what to do for a carry-case.

Those wood boxes at Woodenpost.com have real potential, I think.
