Full Version: Baystate Blue vs. Florida Blue

Yaay, I finally got my Baystate Blue and I was really full of expectation lol: I spent some hours of writing and writing and writing...
it took me long time before I finally found a paper where the Baystate Blue would not feather like crazy... even on papers where
all the other inks behave great, the BSB just bleeds out...

But I found the right paper, grey Greenpeace School-Paper, it's perfect for fountainpens, smooth like nothing else out there...

and I wrote, but after I compared everything, I wasn't so positive about the BSB like I was at the beginning... o_O ... I mean, the blue
color is GREAT, I LOVE it... it's so blue like nothing else... BUT, when I look at it - it just doesn't look like it was written with a FP!
I prefer using very VERY wet writers, with flex or broad nibs, so they will put a lot of ink on the paper, but even with these - the text writen
with Bastate Blue looks just like it was writen with a blue sharpie pen - it's a perfert sharpie-blue! smile.gif And the most important thing - there
is no difference between the wet and not so wet spots in the letters, even when written with very wet writers like I did, no difference at all,
that's the main reason why it looks like it was writen with a blue sharpie, specially when you're writing witn F/M/B Nibs!

I was expecting to declare the BSB as my new favourite blue - but now I realise how great the Waterman Florida Blue is! smile.gif (for my taste)

But the BSB is still a greeat color, so I will use it for some infrequent writings...

It does have that otherworldly look to it, doesn't it?

...it looks so unusual, maybe because it's a too perfect blue... I know that I wrote that with a FP,
but if someone would show me that page and say "Hey, this is FP-Ink, written with a FountainPen!"
there is NO WAY I would belive him! huh.gif It's just so incredible blue... o_O ...too blue...

Exactly right. Which is why, even if it didn't feather (and stain, etc.) I wouldn't want to use it. Now, if someone could come up with something similar that shades nicely....

...take notice that the paper I've used in the picture above is grey, so the contrast on white paper will look much more dramatic! It's 110% blue!

Works great in a 2000. It's pretty much my staple ink for that pen. The problem with the Safaris is staining. Some believe it caused the feed on their Safari to crumble, but it has been fine in my Safari and Al-Star.

im just slightly concerned about the feed crumbling issue and i want to make sure it wont happen in my more expensive 2000

So tell me where to find Greenpeace School Paper. It looks like Black Block. I love discovering new FP paper. Google didn't find it for me.

I know a number of people are using BSB in their 2000s without problem. I really think the problem with the Safaris and Al-Stars was a Lamy problem. It seems like most of the problem pens were new, leading me to believe it was a bad batch of pens. There was even one person who had the same problem who never used BSB. I've used it in a 2000, Safari, and Al-Star without issue. All that being said, I can't guarantee there won't be a problem.

Here's the post on the crumbling feed issue -> http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/in...showtopic=60498

UPDATE: One thing to note is Lamy's customer service is excellent. If the unthinkable happened they would take care of the problem.

I think you'll be happy. FYI, when I first received my 2000 it skipped quite a bit. I disassembled the pen and used a bulb syringe to flush water through the section. That took care of the problem. Also, BSB does not play well with other inks, so it's important to give your pen a very thorough flushing when you change inks.

Enough with the warnings. BSB and the Lamy 2000 are a great combination. Have fun thumbup.gif

Which authors provided the ink sample texts? smile.gif Am I right in suspecting some Thomas Mann in the first one?

They both look great, but for daily use, Florida Blue, no question.

The Baystate Blue is so brilliant! I don't even like blue inks, and I find that one appealing. I do like the shading of the Florida Blue better, though. If the Baystate Blue had some shading, I'd probably have to break down and buy it.
Dr.Grace
It seems unnecessary to talk about making a choice between BSB and Florida Blue when there are so many other great blue inks. As I mentioned above, Diamine Sapphire Blue has a hue similar to BSB with more shading and less hassles, although it's not so water-resistant. I mix 3 parts Sapphire Blue with 1 part Namiki Blue to get a wonderful true blue that's somewhat water-resistant.

I just got a bottle of Baystate Blue, and an eager to trade using KCAT vials.

Bear in mind that Lamy tries all their pens, and they don't come as clean as they should. I've used nothing but Pelikan black ink in some of my Lamys, and in all of them (Alstar, Safari, Studio and 2000) there was some remains of blue ink.

In the case of the Safari and Alstar, that blue hue was more tenacious, maybe because of the finned collector; dunno.

So, flush your Lamys when you buy them before inking, just in case.

My kingdom for a rhodium-trimmed version of the Mare... That's such a beautiful blue, more interesting than the blue on my Optima (which is a lovely pen in its own right). Best,

Waterman Florida Blue gets my vote. It is a wonderful ink....great color and excellent performance.

I have both, David. I think the regular production blue Optima is a more elegant, understated blue. smile.gif

Regarding, N. Baystate Blue v. WM Florida Blue, it's a personal preference. I like my inks to shade and not to misbehave in my pens. So, WM Florida Blue wins hands down.

WOW!! This is one fantastic shade of blue. I am going to have to break down and buy a bottle of it. biggrin.gif
