I love them because they make my handwriting look better, flow more easily, and for me, they turn writing into a full-sensory experience. But that's what they do for me; if you ask Richard or Dillon or Maja or KCat or Wim, you'll get different answers -- and they'll all be true.
and now for something completely ...
oh wait. no. not that different.
in addition to Velma's reasons for loving FPs, i'll add the fact that they reduce the pain i experience when writing. BPs and the like force you to press down on the paper. A good FP will flow with just the weight of the nib on the paper. A major relief for those of us with arthritis and similar ills.
But ultimately, i go back to what Velma called the "full sensory experience" - there is something in the feedback from a pen that seems to trigger emotional/chemical responses in some people. I stitch as well and would say that the act of sliding the needle in and out of the fabric is a similar feeling. Therapeutic, calming and very much a tactile joy. (unless the thread gets knotted)

from there - many are just stunning works of art. they are nothing like the 39c throwaway, they allow you to be expressive beyond what a straight line from a bp or gel will give you, and shoot, if you're going to be addicted to something, why not pens?
