Hi,

my boyfriend, Robert Smith (probably contravox), is very interested in pens. But, I don't really understand the fascination- I just want to see what he sees.

Welcome, Chris, and Happy New Year smile.gif

Pull up a seat and make yourself comfortable. Feel free to look around and ask questions, but if you really want to understand what it is about fountain pens, you have to try writing with one tongue.gif

Hi,

How about this? Does it explain the fascination?

Could be anything, from the physical experience, to the look of pens, to the effect the different nibs have on one's writing to the scent of fountain pen ink... have you asked him directly? And look at the introductory posts people have made -- everyone has slightly different reasons.

I love them because they make my handwriting look better, flow more easily, and for me, they turn writing into a full-sensory experience. But that's what they do for me; if you ask Richard or Dillon or Maja or KCat or Wim, you'll get different answers -- and they'll all be true.

Welcome Chris! Hope you find what you're looking for, like it, and decide to hang out a bit.

I'm not sure anyone who isn't addicted can truly understand the addict or the addiction.

But you can have lots of fun trying!

Welcome indeed!

and now for something completely ...

oh wait. no. not that different.

in addition to Velma's reasons for loving FPs, i'll add the fact that they reduce the pain i experience when writing. BPs and the like force you to press down on the paper. A good FP will flow with just the weight of the nib on the paper. A major relief for those of us with arthritis and similar ills.

But ultimately, i go back to what Velma called the "full sensory experience" - there is something in the feedback from a pen that seems to trigger emotional/chemical responses in some people. I stitch as well and would say that the act of sliding the needle in and out of the fabric is a similar feeling. Therapeutic, calming and very much a tactile joy. (unless the thread gets knotted) smile.gif

from there - many are just stunning works of art. they are nothing like the 39c throwaway, they allow you to be expressive beyond what a straight line from a bp or gel will give you, and shoot, if you're going to be addicted to something, why not pens? smile.gif

Hi,

Welcome Chris!

Anyway, exactly, unless the tread gets knotted. wallbash.gif

There is the same--or quite similar, sliding feel from writing with a fountain pen as pushing a needle in and out, and it calms the nerves. smile.gif

welcome Chris,

explore away. You could spend, literally, hours reading posts and not come close to getting through the amount of knowledge that permeates this board.
Not to mention the liks that one gets directed to.

You really need to try one out for yourself... a pen that is

Hi Chris and welcome to FPN! biggrin.gif
How is Robert doing? I haven't seen any posts from him in months... unsure.gif

The more I use fountain pens, the more I enjoy using them. They are a lot easier to write with than ballpoints... and they are more beautiful. Also, you can find some with specialized nibs that make mediocre handwriting look great! smile.gif
