Full Version: Anatomy of a Lamy Safari Cap

I was thinking about customizing a couple of my Lamy Safaris and swapping clip colors (ie, black for silver). Obviously, this means first disassembling the cap, to free the clip from the cap body.

Has anyone tried this, or know how (or if) it can be done? (If not, I may order a replacement cap from Lamy to experiment on.)

Any guidance would be helpful! Thanks in advance.

I seems like I accomplished this once using a coin to carefully unscrew the black button at the top of the cap, at which point the colored plastic just below it will also come off and you can easily replace/swap the clip. Having just tried this though...it doesn't seem to work. I think perhaps the inner cap is turning with the button, and therefore not unscrewing, and I don't have anything to prevent this with me at the moment. Perhaps someone else has more experience with this.

I can't recall the context, but I believe that the X-slot on the top was once a functional item but is now decorative. If I am remembering correctly, a light shone up the inside of the cap will reveal, in a newer model, the little screw that actually holds everything together.

Take notice of the tentative tone. Someone who knows these things rather than thinks they might recall a discussion of them should confirm.

Ernst, you're correct that the X-end is just decorative. I took a closer look and it seems that everything is held together by a tiny bolt which you have to access from the cap's interior. Turning the X-end with a coin turns the interior cap lining, but does nothing to unscrew the bolt (just like you said, bluelamy). Maybe a long pair of tweezers will do the trick.

I'll report back, hopefully with photos, when I get a chance to do some surgery.

Thanks for the info, guys.

The older Safaris actually had a functional screw attached to the "jewel". The current version does not have a screw or bolt. The "jewel" is attached to more like a snap. You simply pry the jewel and nubbin our of the inner cap with a small screwdriver and the inner cap and spring can be removed. The top of the cap does not come off the new version, the tines of the clip simply insert into the holes in the cap and are secured by the inner cap and nubbin of the jewel. Altogether, a great pen but a significant and unfortunate disign degradation.
