I have a friend who is going to Italy in a few weeks. I thought it would be great if she could purchase a Stipula Etruria Ambra fountain pen for me while she is there. The only problem is the weak dollar. Does it make any sense to buy it in Italy and would I end up paying more for it? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

My suspicion is that you would pay more for it. I recently got an offer from Aurora for pens on sale from Italy. Their sale price was more expensive than what internet sites here priced the pen.

I hope to go to Italy this September and I'm afraid I will not be able to add more Italian pens to my stable because of this.... sad.gif

One important factor to be aware of is that Value Added Tax (VAT) does not apply when the item is to be exported outside the EU. All published prices in Europe have to include VAT (sales tax) so the price you see is the price you pay. The rate for Italy is 20%. Therefore, if a pen costs you 200 Euro you can claim 33.33 Euro back.

The vat is about 22%, and there is no real discount made in Europe.
If you want I can call Italy from France and give you a more accurate answer.
