Hi all. Names Tracy and I live in the San Antonio area of the Republic of Texas.

Wish I had lots of stories to tell about vintage pen collecting and all that, but i'm a fairly new FP user and found this place as I recently lost the only FP I have ever owned. Not even sure who the manufacturer was but it was a great pen and so now i'm in the market for a replacement.

All in all, i'm amazed at how much there is to know and a bit overwhelmed at not buying the right pen...

Look forward to learning.

welcome!

there is a ton of good information here and lots of knowledgeable folks as well.

check out the review section for some insight into what is out there most of the reviews are super in depth very helpful in makeing a new pen purchase.

and not that is helps but there are tons of wonderful pens out there it is very difficult to pick just one. i think that most folks here will agree that pens are addicting and like potato chips you can't have just one.

all the best biggrin.gif ,

Bonjour and Howdy! Many people have been writing about good and affordable pens under the Fountain Pen section, Memphislawyer. Two points for people new to fountain pens: one, don't press as hard as you would with a ballpoint, and 2, don't let people borrow your fountain pens, ever! (because they may press too hard, etc)
Happy new year, Gary and Maude

Welcome!

Not buying the right pen . . . .???? Sounds like the one you had was a good one.

This place is great to learn a lot about FPs in a short time - just started with FPs back in April 2005 myself. FPN is also a great place to hang out - lots of fun.

Check out the review section - that may help you get a feel for some of the FPs out there for your next pen.

See you around.

Hello and welcome to FPN. I just spent a week in Bandera around thanksgiving and had hoped to see some pen stores in that area.

Hi Tracy and welcome to FPN! biggrin.gif

(I loved the film "Gremlins" laugh.gif Is that where you got your username?)

I am curious as to what pen brand/model you lost, as it must have been a very good pen. I don't know if there are any pen shops in your area (we do have a lot of Texans here, though) but try to visit a pen store to try a pen or three. It doesn't mean you have to buy them all (or any, if you don't want to) but you will get a better idea of what is out there. Now, I am assuming the pen you lost was a modern (not vintage) one....

Tracy,
welcome to the world pf FP's.
As one just like you (new) it can be very overwhelming.
After much deliberation and trepidation I just placed my first order to enter this foray.
If it helps, after all the reading and speaking with others over a month or so my decision was to got with a Pelikan m215 fine nib and a Pilot Knight medium nib.

It was not expensive to get "in" the hobby. I went throght Pam Braun (the usual statement applies, no affiliation blah, balah, blah, just a happy customer).

hope this helps and enjoy.

Thanks everyone for the kind response.

Bandera Texas - Cowboy capital of the world. Don't think there are any fountain pens out there, however, The Old Spanish Trail Restaurant serves up a mean plate of migas...

There is a new pen store that opened up here close by in one of the newest malls. I went by there a couple of days ago and tried out the Pelikan 215, the Parker Sonnet and the Waterman something or other (sub $100 and great looking).

The Sonnet was about the best feeling, so i'm thinking, after reading some of the reviews that it may be a good buy.

Ah- mogwai - i'm somewhat partial to a Scottish band called Mogwai.

Regarding the pen I lost; It came in a set and i'm sure wasn't too expensive, but I really enjoyed writing with it and i've got some sentimental attachment to it. I still have the rollerball that came with it and will post a picture of it asap. In the meantime, the pen had a black matte finish. The ends of the cap and the end of the pen has a brushed silver type finish to them and the pen cap collar was also silver. The most interesting characteristic of the pen was the clip. It was quite normal shaped, but seemed to be hinged to the pen cap...so the when flexing the clip, the entire clip flexed at this "joint". When looking into the pencap, you could see the screw that obvoiusly held the clip joint in place, as the screw moves as you flex the clip. Finally, the pen cap screwed on

If anyone has any idea, please let me know and please, pardon the non technical language smile.gif

mog, there might be good news. Some RBs can be converted to FPs fairly easily - just need a FP section. You might be able to, in some way, "get your pen back." Post a pic of your pen so the folks here can take a gander and see.
mogwai
that's good news. I'm beginning to think I should just fork out the money for the Parker Sonnet, but i'm not convinced yet.

Here's a couple of photo's the the RB...can anyone identify it?
