Full Version: Plating my MB...

Ok, so I was able to get a second 149, for a reasonable price. (325++, its a new one with 18k nib)
So here is my issue, I bought it because I know MB will never make a 149 in a platinum/Silver trim. And I really love the feel/nib... Pretty much everything about the 149, but I really like silver trims...
So... I got the pen today, its much nicer than I thought it would be, but I am having second thoughts about it.

I know from a resale point of view, it will be worth less, but that really does not concern me.

I am hoping that everyone here can help me, either for or against I would like to hear all.

I simply do not have such strong preferences regarding trim colors, but I realize that many people do. My own reaction is that if you want a plated silver trim, then go for it. The pen you have is yours, and it is not rare.

As far as resale value, I don't know if you would necessarily loose value. Apparently a lot of people feel as you do (about silver colored trim) and you just might end up enhancing the value. Your resale audience will be smaller (than for factory gold trim) but they might be quite enthusiastic.

after you've had a few 149's you'll realize they can be a little boring so since they are far from rare you may want to use them as a base for customization; all by Paul Rossi {there is a Delta in the last pic and a 146 which he says he will never do again.

Bryant, I know how you feel. I really like the MB MS 149 and the Pelikan M1000, because of how large they are and the look/feel of the nibs -- but I just cannot stand the gold trim and this is a non-negotiable factor for me. As much as I want a pen, I just would not enjoy it aesthetically unless it is trimmed with a white metal of some sort. If your budget allows, then I do not think it is crazy at all to buy a god-trim MS 149, and then have it re-plated. This process will cost you $150 or so via the very reputable Daniel Kirchheimer. The price you paid for the original pen is quite low, so altogether it seems rather worth it. And I second the other poster's suggestion that from a resale point of view it would not be at all "worthless"! If the replating is done by a reputable professional, I think you would have white-metal-trim lovers lining up to buy the pen from you should you decide to sell it. Based on the situation you described, I'd say definitely go for it.
