There are a couple of international traveling journals by a couple of different hosts taking off.

Our group's journal, hereby dubbed ITJ 01, is now on it's maiden voyage to India!

I can only imagine how friendships are built with these journals. I was able to read some of the publically posted pages of one, and it was really interesting to see the progression from awkward initial entries to more comfortable and in-depth entries as the journal made its rounds and groups got to know each other.

Here's to all traveling journalists for all the inspiration and fun stuff to come. /salute!

Now, with all these journals of various groups making rounds, maybe we should nudge someone into creating a traveling journal tracking forum...

And a quick edit for USA participants in traveling journals: Postage rates are going up effective May 12, 2008. A post internationally is currently .90 per ounce. The postal clerk at the satellite station where I sent out our journal today said he does not know what the new international rate will be, they won't be notified until the morning of May 12. Rates within the USA are going up .01 for domestic mail, and a first class domestic mailing will be at .42 per ounce. (I bought 100 Forever Stamps today. biggrin.gif )

Our journal, the ITJ 01, came in at just under 3 ounces in a 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 inch cardboard photo mailer (Apica CD10 size journal, just slightly larger than a pocket notebook/cahier). So, I paid the 3-oz weight. That didn't bother me, and the cardboard mailer will get it to its destination in a little better shape than a standard paper envelope. This is just a heads up.

I second the idea of having a traveling journal tracking forum ... Great idea kiavonne!

Our International Traveling Journal (currently dubbed Summer 08), contains six books, the first of which will go out in tomorrow's mail and will be on its way to Shetland, Scotland. The remaining 5 books will be mailed before the end of the week. With all the separate traveling journal groups and all the books involved, having a tracking forum would add to the fun and improve the likely success of these endeavors.

As a member of ITJ 01 I heartly support the idea of a tracking forum. It will be fun to be able to easily see where they all are and will build anticipation as you see the one you are writting in getting closer. It will even benefit the whole community if they ever want to know how long it takes for mail to get from one country to the next. hmm1.gif

Thanks again to Kiavonne for getting ITJ 01 going.

General knowledge for the group or others interested in an INTERNATIONAL traveling journal:

Our maiden journal participants list is full at 5 members.

I'm not adverse to starting another ITJ if more persons want to join, but I'd like only to host 2 to 3 groups tops. I'd like to keep the lists to 4 to 5 participants per journal.

The current plan is, when a journal has filled, I will scan the pages and email them to the participants, and then conduct a drawing to see which journalist of the group will be gifted the full, completed journal.

We'll keep journals going 'round until either a) a group decides as a whole to stop, or b ) a journal gets lost in the netherworld (but will start a new journal for the participants to continue on once we've determined a loss).

Love the idea of conducting a drawing for the filled journal!

Is there an example on a website I can read to better understand how this works and to see the end (or ongoing) result?

Here's a quote from HDoug that includes a link to past circulating journals that have been scanned and hosted:

Returning to originator seems a good default. Consider that many don't come back, and much work goes into the creation and administration of them. I usually scan all the pages after I complete my entries just in case it doesn't make it back to me.

Member joeanes has posted scans of his and the completed ones of melnicki here. (If these scans can't sell you on the idea of traveling journals, nothing can!)

Doug

Someone also posted a link not too long ago to a commercial site that sells circulating journals for people to start, but I can't find that link at the moment.

I would love to be part of an international traveling journal, Kiavonne, if you are willing to start a new one up and have enough names. I'll send you a msg back channel.

I'm certainly willing to get another one started. We'll need to see about another 2 to 3 more persons interested. Keep in mind that I've started international journals, so there are more costs involved with mailing, as well as time involved for travel between participants and countries.

Doesn't mean we can't start a domestic journal, though, too.

Update: Not sure where ITJ 01 sits at the moment. Last word was some delays, and it was in the UK.

Thank's I was wondering where it had gotten to. I'll just continue to be patient.

Journal just arrived on the east coast of the USA. Due to the loss of a pen and the pending repairs of another. I will have to wait until a third one arrives on Monday (just bought from eBay) to make my contribution. But come next Thursday, I'll send it off to the next person

Just dropped the Journal in the mail. So off to Texas it goes. I only managed 4 pages front and back, it has been a busy week. Thanks again kiavonne for getting this up and running.
kiavonne
Huh uh. The thanks go to you and the other participants for joining in. That's what makes it all fun, getting to know new friends. smile.gif
