Hi,
Now, I will just say that I like them because it gives my pen a better balance.
Well, it is just a preference, like posting caps...nothing to get really fired up about.

It makes me feel like my pen is more sturdy.

If it's smooth I won't like it. Textured, I might. Smooth metal sections are too slippery in my fingers.

Hi,
I understand...a very commom problem with the smooth metal sections.
I have yet to experience the problem myself, but yes, very common.
I was just thinking, if you coated the metal section with titanium dioxide, I suppose, it would be a better grip along with the same hefty feel.

nope - too slippery. and if it's textured, that just feels like it's biting into my fingers.
the exception - the VP which is metal with a coating of course. But i think the clip forces me to grip the pen properly and offsets the slippery feeling.

For me it depends on the pen. My Bexley Submariner Grande has a metal section and I love it. However, I probably wouldn't like a metal section on a small, narrow pen.

Ah . . . . but you can have the metal sections swapped out for black resin ones, which is so much better! As good as the Grande is with the metal section, with the resin section, it's even better!

Nope. I don't like metal sections.
For that same reason, I've never liked metal-bodied ballpoints that have any sort of "clicker" type mechanism. It forces you to hold the metal barrel of the pen, and I've always found them to be just too slippery and uncomfortable to use.
But then, I may be pickier than most...

I don't like metal sections at all. It is a personal preference. I am sure that a metal section does add to the balance of a pen, but the feel of a metal section bothers me beyond belief. There are some pens I will not own because of the metal sections. For example, I really like my Dupont "Orpheo," and I have a black lacquer one with a plastic section. I would like a second Orpheo, but nearly all the models available have metal sections, which, again, is a no go for me. Example two - I have one of the Parkville LE Submariner Grandes with a plastic section, and I love it. But if that model were only available with a metal section, I would not own one.

I like the metal sections you find on the gold filled Wahl pens. I think it really makes a complete look to the pen. I don't really have too much of a problem with the gripping aspect of the metal section, but don't necessarily like them on everything. Vintage moreso, modern, not as much.

Depends on the grade and finish of metal. Chrome and some smooth finishes slide too easily out of my fingers. I have a Cross ATX Black pen with a chrome barrel above the nib that isn't too bad though. Guess i have to test each model out. I prefer resin or the celluloids better. Better grip.

Metal or Laquer are both too slipery, also on BPs, where you need resistance. So in those cases, I'm looking for clearly textured surfaces for friction.

Not that sure. But I leave fingerprints all over and it drives me crazy.

Hi Dillon,
No, I don't like metal sections, as they feel cold to the touch, to me at least, and are generally quite slippery to the touch too. Finally, somehow ink spreads more on metal sections then on resin, plastic or celluloid section whens refilling from the bottle

. Maybe because of the higher density of metal? It makes for more messy fingers more often.
Give me celluloid any day!
Warm regards, Wim

I do not like metal pen sections on my pens except with a few exception. If there is a rough area on the section so my fingers wont slip, then that is fine. The new Visconti Van Gogh have a band near the end if the section that has a raised V for visconti and a rough pattern. This seems to keep my finger from sliding off the pen when I write. This is an improvement from the first generation Vangogh IMHO.
Normally, as Wimg said, it is cold to the touch and I really do not like having a metal section come in contact with ink. I would rather have a resin or celluloid section instead. Celluloid has a much preferred natural feeling to it rather than a cold metal section that gives me a felling of something other than natural.

I voted Yes, but I really don't mind either way. I prefer the warmth of a non-metal section, but a metal section isn't a deal breaker.

My preference is for smaller-sized pens with true EF nibs, so there isn’t a lot of choice to start with. Further narrowing of the scope only happens with two critical things – does the cap post / what is the filling system.

I hate 'em with a passion! I see the new Omas pens or the new Stipula 22s with metal sections and my heart sinks. I do agree with Brian that the metal section on the old Wahls complete the look, but then take a look at any Wahl with such a section that has gotten normal use: even their heavy gold fill can't stand up to the corrosive effect of the ink. So any of today's plated sections? Forget it!
Anyway, from an aethetic or practical POV, I really dislike metal sections! Other than my modern VPs, I think the only metal sectioned pen I owe is the Rotring 600, which was my first "real" fountain pen.

I like metal pens and flighters. Sturdy and strong, not too bad to hold either.
