Hi all,
A few weeks ago I purchased a lovely fountain pen on Ebay (no name, celluloid art deco-ish looking).

It has a Meduim nib that labelled "Very Smooth Made in USA" and is a little bit Italic. You might say it has a little bit of flex, but very smooth is a good description.

It tends to stop flowing a little, but is a pleasure to write with otherwise (I will take it to the shop soon....).

I could ask the seller, but it is so much more fun to ask here who knows about this pen, when it might have been made, anything else.

(BTW, is it rude to say I paid 7.49 plus shipping on this?)

Thanks,
Mars

Below is the description on ebay and the picture on which I purchased. (Hope it uploaded ok....)

"This is a clipless-model unmarked fountain pen in beautiful light and dark green striped celluloid. It has a black end-cap and gold-plated wide ribbed band and lever. There is some typical wear of the gold-plating on the lever. The black section is partially visulated with virtually no ambering and the nib is a Veri-Smooth gold-plated medium. Takes up and releases ink. Measures 5” capped, 6¼” posted."

Looks like the same celluloid stock as my Majestic in green. May in fact be identical except for the presence of the clip marked Majestic and a tipped nib (as I remember, the VeriSmooth may be an indented steel nib, untipped, could be wrong though). Pretty pen, anyway, and if it writes well, so much the better.

I've found that many of the lower tier pens from the 30's to the 50's weren't bad writers at all. The nibs are usually steel or gold washed steel (plate is too strong a word for the amount of gold on them, usually!), and they tend to have old style Waterman's type feeds, but they work well.

A new sac is in order, I suspect.

Very nice looking pen.
And you bought it at a great price!

Very nice pen at a very nice price. I have to wonder if "Very Smooth" is the brand and not just a description hmm1.gif

I've got a pen with a "Veri Smooth" point which i paid entirely too much for just because of the marking on the point-- $10! I can't tell any more about it, or whether the name belongs to the pen or some third-party point maker, but they definitely exist as a label.

Thanks Folks,

Just to clarify, it does say "Very Smooth" and not Veri Smooth, if that makes a difference.

Peter's comments seem spot on about the nature of the pen.

I will look into the idea of the brand being Very Smooth...

The pen was restored, but I think it could use a better (tighter?) sac.

In general, I am finding old no names and fourth tier pens fascinating. Their age gives them a certain kind of quality....
Hey, and I can afford them! My next post can be "In praise of [not so] famous pens."

Thanks,
Mars
