Full Version: Ink reacting with adhesives/epoxies

Alright, friends, here's one for you. I'm trying to build an eyedropper from a perfect candidate....well, except for the vent holes in the barrel. Not big gaping holes like the Safari, but small ventilation holes.

I'm thinking a good epoxy could be used to seal the holes (with a little extra spread around the holes outside the pen for additional support). I had contemplated using bits of rubber to seal the holes with epoxy for support, but the epoxy could eat the rubber. I'm a bit worried about epoxy/ink contact, though. We all know solids can react with (or otherwise seep chemicals into) liquids...though I still use my Nalgenes for drinking water.

Does anyone know how inks in general react with the various epoxies (specifically multi-part adhesives)? Any especially inert formula that would be ideal for this use?

I know just enough about chemistry to be dangerous, so any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I'd think you'll be fine. Most inks are pH balanced, making them essentially just water. If you're really concerned, buy some marine grade epoxy. Once set epoxy doesn't have much in the way of water soluble components.

I'll second Chemyst...

A good quality epoxy is fully reacted and basically inert once cured. Use a marine grade or something like WEST, RAKA or MAS and you should have no issues.

Ahh.... Makes perfect sense. Thanks for the advice, friends!! I should have some marine epoxy laying around already, and with Spring here it's time to dig it out anyway. smile.gif
