At the Central PA Pens meeting, I picked up an Esterbrook, a green dollar pen with a 2284 nib. This nib is very nice and smooth (and wet) to write with, preferable to broad nibs on pens many times the cost. Did I just get a good one, or are the 2284s like that?

I have always wanted to try or buy one of the stub or italic nibs by Esterbrook but never seem to get one. Your positive comments just make me want one all that much more. I'm afraid to answer your question directly I am of no help so maybe someone else will chime in.

Your 2284 sounds just like mine, a great nib if you write big.

Fred!

Yes, I just --today-- got a J Estie in the mail with a 9284 nib (the masterpoint version of your 2284) and it's a very broad, smooth-line nib! I hear they're very rare and I've seen few of them. It's called a "Signature Stub" nib and I can see why. It's very pleasant to write with!

Enjoy!

I have a few 2284 and 9284 nibs. The ones I have used are all very smooth writers straight off. Strangely similar to a cursive italic in some ways. I also have a 3968 nib which is a firm broad script nib with the 3xxx 'sunburst' pattern that writes a nice smooth medium/broad line.

Although not as common as some of the other 2xxx and 9xxx renew points I wouldn't regard these nibs as truly rare in the way that some of the 6xxx, 7xxx and 8xxx ranges are rare.

I do know of at least one ebay seller who tries to beat up the 'rarity' of these nibs but you do stumble across them a fair bit.
