At the Central PA Pens meeting, I picked up an Esterbrook, a green dollar pen with a 2284 nib. This nib is very nice and smooth (and wet) to write with, preferable to broad nibs on pens many times the cost. Did I just get a good one, or are the 2284s like that?

Fred!
Yes, I just --today-- got a J Estie in the mail with a 9284 nib (the masterpoint version of your 2284) and it's a very broad, smooth-line nib! I hear they're very rare and I've seen few of them. It's called a "Signature Stub" nib and I can see why. It's very pleasant to write with!
Enjoy!
