Full Version: Too many Pelikans?
The Fountain Pen Network > Brand Focus > The Pelikan Forum
Matt
I really like Pelikan pens, and my collection relfects that. I do not like flashy pens that really stand out. Maybe that's why I like the conservative looks of Pelikans, that and their incredible reliability.

Here is what I have: (and what am I missing? what should I have in my collection? I really like the 200's with the old style domed caps.) And please don't tell me that I need an M200 clear demonstrator, or do I? What about the 215? Heeeelp!

M800 black (old style with gold medallions)
M805 blue stripe (Binder medium stub)
M600 red
M605 solid blue
M400 tortoise
M400 white tortoise
M250 burgundy (old style)
M250 amber demonstrator
M200 gray marble (old style)
M200 tortoise (old style)
M200 dark green (solid)
M200 blue/black
M200 Anthracite demonstrator
M200 green marble
Go green

Specialty nibs
200 Binder XF
250 Binder EF, extra flex (amazing nib!)
800 Binder stub

Vintage

400NN black
400NN green stripe
400NN tortoise

Matt,

Yes, you do have too many Pelikans.

You need to give me all of your Pelikans from 600 and above. I do not have enough of those (in fact none).

Then you should go out and buy a 215 - I have one of those and it's a great pen!

Matt,

As you are compiling an impressive group, I suggest you get a 100 or 100N. I feel these are the best of the vintage Pelikans.

Good luck---

Don't see an M1000 there...what's up with that?

In current issue, I recently added a 405 in blue. Perfect shirt pocket size, fits well in the hand posted or un, lovely lapis-like color, with silver furnishings. Fantastic, a constant companion.

Today I'm using a striated blue 405 that I got from Deirdre. I love it extremely and when I get tired of writing I just hold it and pat it embarrassed_smile.gif . Also, since you like domed caps, how about the humble 140? It's striated green and has the domed cap with the engraved logo in green.

Oh, the 215! That is a gorgeous pen! I have the one with rings (not the diamonds or pinstripes, the rings). I am very happy with it, and it's... I don't know, SHOCKING that you don't have one of these, considering the breadth of your collection.

I'll just echo what's been said above.

The m215, m1000 and 100n are some of my favorite Pelikans. Each offers something significantly different from the ones you've already got. The m1000's nib is flexier than any other modern Pel, the m215's metal barrel makes for the perfect m200-size feel/heft in my opinion, and the 100n is a different shape/style altogether.

Very nice collection!
Matt
I have been tempted by the M1000, but the 800's are about as big as I like. In fact, for my hand the 600 is nearly perfect. I tend to carry around the 200/400 size for everyday stuff, but find them a bit small for extensive writing. When I write in my journal I almost always use the bigger pens.

I do really like the looks of the M215 with the silver rings. Hmmm.

Of the modern pens, the green stripe is the only pattern I do not have.

I have also been tempted by a 140, but they seem pretty similar to the 400NN's, just a bit smaller.

Does anyone like the clear demonstrators?

I would love a clear demo Pelikan!

PSSST! If you want a M205, there might be one left at Pearteepens. I had ordered for it, but when I got a call saying they were out, I asked PTP to cancel my order and then I ran over to ebay and bought an Amber 250. But then James from PTP emailed me saying that they might have one 205 left.

biggrin.gif And no, I don't think your Pelikan collection is too big. You have LOTS of backups.
Bill
No, you do not have too many! But you do have a nice representative sample of the Tradition and Souveraen lines.

You definitely NEED a 215, a 100/140, a 640 LE, and maybe an M1000 to round it out. rolleyes.gif

Then you can get started on the Epoch, Pura, Pelikano, and other lines.

Bill

Matt
For those of you who have both the M800 and M1000, could you comment on the differences in hand. It looks like the 1000 is about 1/4 in. longer and a bit girthier. Does writing with the 1000 feel significantly different? Is it noticably heavier than the 800?

Still tempted, and isellpens.com (no affiliation) has very attractive prices. But I would have to break my rule of not spending more than around $200 on a single pen. Of course I remember a long time ago, when I first started buying fountain pens, that my upper limit was about $100.

ethernautrix—I am very near ordering the 215 silver rings. Thanks for the encouragement.

Try the lozenge 215 - I have one (recently in rotation) and is a very elegant pen. It shows the pattern more, IMO, than the ring pattern. But to each his/her own...

you need the Telekom grey/magenta 200. smile.gif
penguinmaster
Yes you do have to many. Send some to me as well. I'll take the 400 tortoise and blue 605. Seriously, nice collection though. Pelikans are definitely high on my list of FPs.
Matt
I just ordered the bright yellow M200 from the gentleman in the Netherlands, 55 Euros. I really like the solid color M200's that don't seem to be around much. I now have a burgundy, green, and yellow.

And Kcat, where may I ask would I find the Telekom pen? I'm sure that they are not too easy to find, and probably overpriced.

Here is the Telekom, next to a demonstrator

I believe these were made in 1994 (the Telekoms) for a German Telecommunications Company

I'd start with contacting Regina Martini (sorry, don't know her email but a web search should find her website in Germany) - though I don't know if she still has any she may get them in occasionally. Last time I heard they were about $80 or so. Mine was considerably less than that but they were not in as much demand when I bought.

Regina's site.

You see them on ebay now and then. I've seen them listed as "pink and gray Pelikan" or "magenta and gray" and even as "Telekom 200".
Brian
Nope. Not too many at all.
juhtolv

Yes, it obvious and evident that you have too many Pelikans. Just send some of them to me for free. roflmho.gif

I think you do have enough moderns.

I would get a 140, a 400 and a 400N.

I think something is missing...

Hey what about the Sahara and the Grand Place and the Piccadilly(sp)? They are way cute. Oh so are some of the "Cities" pens.

just trying to help! lticaptd.gif

What does the phrase, "too many", mean? wink.gif Seriously, do you remember that scene near the end of Jeremiah Johnson,

Bear Claw Chris Lapp: You've come far pilgrim.
Jeremiah Johnson: Feels like far.
Bear Claw Chris Lapp: Were it worth the trouble?
Jeremiah Johnson: What trouble?

Too many? What trouble? If they are not getting used, only then would I say too many.

I am not that into flash either. I do dearly wish that the 1931 and 1935 flavors from Pelikan were not so limited edition and so expensive. They are not flashy. They are beautiful. Nice photo examples are found in a link below. For my eye, the 1935 Lapis Blue, 1935 Jade and 1931 Limited Edition red with white gold cap are as beautiful as any pen ever made. The simple design is far nicer to me than their current Souverän Series. If you get one of those, why not get two and let me keep one for you?

Of course I don't think I have "too many." It's all relative. And yes, I use all my Pelikans regulary. If there was one that I did not use, I would sell it. I am a user, and I would only keep a pen that I didn't use if it had some sentimental value, was a gift, or something like that.

I may sell a couple to refinance others that I am more interested in. For example, I really like the old style M200 with the domed cap. If I can find an old stlye version I will sell the modern ones. I have a blue/black pen that fits this category. Maybe an old style green/black would be nice as well.

Some of the Cities pens are attractive, and I like the 600 size the best, but they seem rather expensive.

The Sahara and most of the LE pens don't do much for me.

What I would really like is an M605, but in black. Pelikan does not seem to make one, though they have the black with silver in a 405 and 805. Why not in the 600 size? It seems an oversight. Maybe I will have to settle on the M405. I have so many 200/400 nibs that is it nice to change them around with different pens. My only Pelikan with silver trim is an all blue M605, (and a 215, ordered but not yet arrived). I generally prefer silver trim over gold.
