Full Version: How Do You Carry Your Pens?

How do you carry your pens if you do not have a shirt pocket? This is usually an issue for me during the summer months. I have lost a couple of nice pens (Parker 45 Stainless Steel FP and Waterman Phileas Rollerball come to mind) by carrying them in my pants pocket. sad.gif

I used to have a really nice pen pouch that could be worn on a belt, but cannot find it because it is in a "safe place" which means, "I can't find it." I bought this pouch about four years ago from Levenger. The reason I stopped using it was because I worked in a very unfriendly fountain pen environment. My boss didn't understand why I used a fountain pen and she laughed when she saw the pouch and encouraged the secretaries to poke fun at it too. angry.gif

Anyway, I put it away and now I can't find it. I think the Fountain Pen Hospital has something similar to what I had, but I liked the one I had.

Any suggestions?

For travel to and from work and for other trips I have 3 leather zipper cases.

#1 case is a 3 pen zipper case
#2 case is a 14 pen zipper case
#3 case is a 40 pen zipper case

For work, I use my 3 pen case and my 14 pen case on a daily basis. The 3 pen case holds 2 visconti inkpots and 1 pen of my choice. I usually bring 6 pens in the 14 pen case. This is my weekly pen rotation which I pack up on a Sunday night to get ready for the week.

If I have a meeting or I f I am away from my desk with clients or on site surveys, then I put 2 pens in my 3 pen case along with 1 Visconti Ink pot.

As for my 40 Pen case, I use this as an overflow at home.

I use a couple of 2-pen leather pouches which I keep in my purse smile.gif
I should get another 12-pen case, though, as I am using the one I have just to store pens...

I don't normally carry more than a single pen (although have a couple waiting for me at my office). I have a couple dress shirts that don't have pockets so I just clip the pen under my tie to the shirt's placket (<= likely not the correct word). Same on a polo shirt (be very very careful not to over-stress the clip). I never slip a pen into my pocket....far greater chance of breaking it.

One of the advantages of the Rotring Core (besides the fact that almost nobody will try to steal it, for it might as well be a nuclear device), is that the clip, the cap and the cap-snap are very robust, and you can clip the pen outside the front pocket of your jeans, near the seam. You won't lose it, nor break it. And you will look as elegant as a cowboy from Jupiter, sort of.

The Rotring Core is one of my favorite pens, definitely. Works like a charm.

You're right. smile.gif My favorite pen. Never falls off my pocket, for that is where I carry it. unsure.gif blush.gif I put all my pens on my desk in a nice box, whenever I go somewhere I put them in my pocket. Not a safe place as I lost 2 that way. blink.gif ( I found them again, soo...)

After reading Bryan's wonderful review on the Venlo 5 pen drawer, I was pretty set on one. Then I finally realized that I like to travel light so I was back to the drawing board.

During my recent trip to Hong Kong, I was able to pick up the Montblanc Meisterstuck Siena 3-pen pouch at a reasonable price. A pen in my shirt pocket, 2 pens and a travelling ink pot would serve all of my writing needs for the day.

I really like the fact that the dividers inside are only sewed in on one side so that adjust automatically. I can even fit a Churchill in there without problems. The dividers can also be folded down to fish out the shorter pens like an Optima.

I carry mine in my pants pocket, but clipped to the outside edge (see my avatar for an impression). I have never lost one out of my pocket that way, and there are times when I probably should have. I have broken the clip on my Phileas twice though, but the lifetime warranty has taken care of that in short order. This can be quite hard on the body of the pens as I carry my keys in the same pocket, but that's why I tend to focus on cheaper, more durable pens. The only other danger is that pens with insecure caps can become uncapped and then stain your pockets/pants. I had a Pelikan GO! that drained an entire snootful of Lamy green onto a pair of cords recently. They were old and the pen needed to be flushed, but that wasn't what I had in mind! smile.gif

Hi,

Well, you are making me want to want to tell Pendemonium to send me two Purple nylon 40 pen cases. tongue.gif

Sounds like pen envy to me. ohmy.gif

Seriously - insecure people find ways to attack others because they are so afraid of being found out to be the insecure and envious twits that they are. She probably felt like a. she couldn't use a fountain pen if she tried and b. she couldn't "afford" a fountain pen. (even though she could have, her perception is probably that of so many people these days - that they are too expensive to buy/use.)

I can't really answer your question. I don't have a "real job" and when I do go out it's with my small-but-carries-everything purse so my pens usually just go in the pen slots in that. Sometimes I carry a 2-pen pouch that I got on sale from Levenger several years ago.

oh... one thing to consider though you might worry about the pens clanking around - I've seen glasses cases and cell phone cases that clip onto or slide onto a belt. depending on the size of the pens you're using, would something like this work? most of these run about $10 and i've seen them at drug stores and electronics stores and Target and....

A wrap in my bag with 12 pens, and usually one in my shirt pocket (except if I wear my topcoat, because it interferes with the natural flow of the cut laugh.gif)

I just use a Pelikan 3-pen leather case, and sometimes the fake leather single pen case that my Taccia came in. I put the cases in one of the pockets of my laptop case.

People like that remind me of some of my 3-year old's classmates, and some of their parents who used to be like that as teenagers. I find such adults who make of fun of others for the most trivial reasons imaginable simply disgusting.

I use a Wilde Wrap from Pendeminum and love it. It's one of the kimono wraps. Not only do I cart it all over the house with me, it's easy to throw in my tote when I go out. The one I have holds six pens. biggrin.gif
PTLaw
I like the wraps I have seen on Pendemonium and will probably get one of those. I have a pen case (again from Levenger) made to hold four pens that is currently holding five pens and a drylighter. rolleyes.gif

The pouch may be stuck in an old briefcase. wink.gif

I tried not to let the teasing about the fountain pens (and pouch) bother me. I have a different job, a different boss and different secretaries. They see me for the non-conformist I am and appreciate my style. cool.gif

When I finish law school, my office will be a fountain pen heaven. smile.gif

This thread just gave me the best idea for a Christmas gift, for a friend of mine to carry her pens in! I have been wondering what to buy for her over the past two weeks.

Thank you!!!

Once a friend of mine knitted a small one for one pen. I put the Wearever in it and it stuck out a hole in the back. blink.gif Was too small. I had to use it to hold cartridges. smile.gif

RichardS: Could you please reveal the brand name and model of your case? And also name the beauties nested inside it? This is a splendid picture!
RichardS
Hi Watermoon,

The case is leather and bought for (IMO) a very reasonable $18 plus postage from a guy called "wood-bin" on Ebay. No affilation; he seems to be a regular seller there. The leather is nice and soft, and the zip fairly sturdy. I can't vouch for the elastic that holds the pens in place; no probs at all at the moment, but if there's going to be a problem, I think it may be there. There's also a flap on the right hand side which protects the two sets of pens from rubbing on each other when the case is shut.

The pens from L-R are:

1. Laban Celebration F nib
2. Visconti Van Gogh F nib
3. Montblanc Meisterstuck 146 F nib
4. Pelikan Berlin OBB nib
5. Marlen (dot)com M nib
6. Sheaffer Balance II B nib
7. Laban Mento/Kaiser LE B nib
8. Tombow propelling pencil
9. Danitrio Avant Garde M nib
10. Parker Duofold Centennial (Type 1) M nib
11. Lamy Vista B nib
12. Reden_s F nib

Hope this helps,
RichardS

This array reminds me why I'm so attracted to FPs: they give me something more to wonder at. Like seashells I could write with, or paintbrushes that would be works of art in themselves.

I can't help but imagine the clips of the pens on one side rubbing against the caps of the other pens on the other side once you close that case.

If you look to the right of the picture, you will see a leather flap. Before you close this carrying case, you fold the flap over the pens on the right and thus you are protecting them from being rubbed up against by the pens on the other side.

Hi Richard,

Yes, those are some lovely pens you have in your pen case smile.gif (wow, the Balance II looks like my Laban Mento "Autumn Flake" blink.gif )
I bouight the same pen case from Martin Smith at Woodbin a year or two ago. The leather is very soft but the case provides good protection for my pens. Thanks for posting the photo--very nice!

Just won a pen case on eBay otherwise I was going to buy this one: -

I use my jacket pocket to carry my pen to and from work.

I did use a two pen leather wallet to carry my pens around in. Then I realised that a) I only use one pen in a meeting and cool.gifI used my hand to carry my pen case, so now I cut out the middle man and carry one pen to meetings IN MY HAND......(unorthodox, but highly effective I find.)

I have to admit that were i to have my entire collection (i'm only a recent starter) in my pen case at work, i would probably not continue to have a job for much longer.

I can recommend the Cross pen wallets however, for anyone who fancies one.

Cheers!

I have two different sizes of Healthy Back Bag, which as you can see in the photo, sits vertically as long as you adjust it to fit right. There are pockets galore inside the bag, including down that back inside gusset, so your pens' experience is strictly vertical as long as you don't lay the bag down flat. Hang it from a chair instead, perhaps, or it's so comfy you could just keep it on you, that's what it's made for.

I only have the nylon one...too bad I spent too much money on pens to buy the leather version happyberet.gif But it's a handsome bag anyway.

I use a two or three slot cigar case. Slips in my jacket or shirt pocket easily. Here is a thought (I had a boss who had opinions about everything): Cost analysis> Purchasing and using my favorite fountain pen: $300.00, being razzed about my pens and their use :nothing, signing my former bosses termination letter with my fountain pen and delivering it--PRICELESS!!!

Same here except for the purse part. If I started using my wife's purse she might get upset huh.gif
When going to meetings or what ever, I just carry the pouch in my hand or put it in my pocket. Other than that, said pouch remains on my desk keeping my pens safe and warm.

How about using a cigar case to carry a few pens at at time?

I have a couple of Botticelli tins (3 X 10 X 19cm) from which I've already eaten the chocolate! One stays at home the other comes with me in my backpack. I've lined them with cotton, and they can hold about 10 pens each. To prevent an accidental pop-open, I wrap an elastic around it. Strong and safe...

My mother buys inexpensive magnifying glasses with cases quite often from Costco and drug stores. (I guess that would be chemists in the UK?) She keeps the glasses and gives the cases to me, which are perfect for two FP. I can even stick a couple of cartridges in there. They come in all sorts of colors, from elegant to garish.

A cheap lime green faux leather pen case that I got from a stationery shop/bookstore in Paris, and the penholders in my laptop/book bag are where I keep most of my pens. I keep my Pelikano with a broken clip in my pants pocket. I am a student so it was logical for me to buy a bookbag/ laptop bag with the maximum number of penholders (five).

I've just started using a pouch (well, two Danitrio pouches from winedoc), and one handy thing about these is a pen fits on each side, outside the pouch but inside the strap. So a total of four average sized pens per pouch are a good fit.
