Hello

I just bought a lamy safari(EF) and lamy black ink(bottled).I'm new to this fountain pen stuff,i usually use mechanical pencil to take down notes but now i use a fountain pen.It is great, no painful fingers. Here my question, is lamy black ink corrosive to my fountain pen?

Thanks

No. Lamy Black ink should work just fine, with no corroding.

On the other hand, Lamy Blue Black ink should be used with caution, because it is an iron gall ink and might cause corroding if the pen is not cleaned out frequently.

Lamy Black is not an iron gall ink, nor are the other Lamy ink colors -- just the Blue Black.

Yes I second that. Iron gall ( ferrogallic) ink that is made for FPs has a much smaller amount of corrosive chemicals than the old straight stuff. So it's OK to use in your pens you just need to be more diligent about rinsing and cleaning of the pens.

Do iron-gall inks like Lamy blue-black have any effect on 14k nibs? I thought that gold was impervious to chemical corrosion.

Gold is, but not the alloys in it.

yes pure gold is impervious to most oxidation but there are chemicals out there that will go through gold. As for me just rinsing the pen after each fill of an iron gall ink has kept them clean and rust free.

An interesting story is that during WWII there were German Chemist who saved their valuables by dissolving them. So you had a clear bottle of liquid on the shelf that you could precipitate out the gold later.

I've been using Lamy Blue-Black in a 14k nib pen, rinsing it once a month. No problems so far.

Nice to read this thread.. I'd been using Lamy Black until I read somewhere it was an iron-gall ink that posed a threat to my pens. Ah well.. I discovered Noodlers Black in the mean-time and may not go back...

I do quite like the way the Lamy Black behaves in a few of my pens, so it is nice to find out that it won't kill my pens on some dark moonless night when no one is paying attention.
