hello all
thoughts on nibs retipping etc
first everyone seems to want small irrdium pellets what is wrong with using thiin irridium wire readily availiable costs a lot less than rhodium
what would be wrong with soldeing the tip as opposed to welding as i have recently been informed would have been the original way
if welding is the best way (i suppose it would be the easier) have seen sites explaining how to make micro (miniature) spot welders. would like to try this myself but not that clever with electronics (must see a friend soon)
one last thing is it very difficult to cut threads in polyester resin with had taps /dies and is a cutting lubricant used
as i said if anyone thinks im being stupid please say so

I can't answer about the spot welding on nibs... but the tapping/threading on plastic, I can... (You have checked out www.nibs.com, right?)

I've just finished doing some threading in acrylic, and it worked great. The particles tended to stick in the freshly cut threads, though, so I would have to back out after going in a few mm, and clear out the debris. I was able to mount the piece and turn it on a lathe supported by a 1/4" bolt threaded at 20 turns per inch... far too few for a cap or body thread, but based on my experience, I'll be looking for finer threads to cut.

Some people have had good luck with hand chasing threads, but that's out of my league so far.
