Would someone explain what a PM is and how one sends one to someone in order to put a hold on something,

If you are signed in you can click on the upper left rectangular box with the name of the person and a drop down menu will allow you to "PM" or send a Personal Message.

click on your name - it will take you to your page where you can click on messages - inbox, etc.

PM = Private Message (also known as, I believe, the b/c, or Back Channel!)
Left-click your mouse on the name of the person to whom you want to send a PM, then do the same on the Send a Message option which appears....then you'll be given lots of boxes, to fill-in or ignore, as appropriate, to create and send your message.
Good luck...just give it a try....send someone(me if you like) a Test Message, to see how it works.
If you send it to me, and it works, I will reply and you'll see the whole system in action!

I have never used My Assistant, so someone else can answer that one

To get rid of the assistant just click the "close window" or X box... To see and manage messages go to the upper right of the main screen where it says "...New Messages", click on that line and it'll take you to the "mailbox" where you can read and save, sort, or delete messages sent to you. These are PMs.
