Full Version: Experiences With Different Types of Wahl Nibs

Dear Fellow Forum Members,
I am considering getting my old broken nibbed Wahl Doric repaired. (For all I know, the nib broke a half century ago, long before I received the pen. Therefore, I have no idea about its writing characteristics.). I would appreciate hearing the experiences of forum members with different types of Wahl
nibs (medium, firm, flexible). I'm looking for information about how the different types of nibs perform for ordinary writing like note taking or journaling. I should add that my preference would be for a fine nib, as long as it is a smooth, non-scratchy, writer.
Thank you in advance for your comments.

To start with you need to decide whether you care if the new nib is "correct" from a collecting standpoint for the pen. If it is a gold seal pen it needs to be a gold seal or adjustable nib to be correct. But if it's purely for functionality, correct doesn't matter so much. For note taking and journaling most people want a harder firmer nib, not one that is very flexible. That will make it easier because nice flex nibs come at a premium. If you post a pic of the pen with a length measure it will be easier to tell you exactly what to look for in a nib. Many here may have one to offer, and even be able to set it for you.

My experience with Wahl nibs is very positive. Even the flexible nibs tend to be smooth. My advice is to find a nib that fits in your pen and use it. Chances are that you'll be pleased. The nibs are the reason i'm into Wahls.

You should have no problem finding a fine. It's the broader nibs that are hard to find.

I have a fine, firm nib on a late 30s Doric. It's one of my favorite nibs without a bit of scratch. I have four Eversharps that I use: a broadish Gold Seal manifold, the other Doric, a fairly flexy fine Skyline, and a firm, extra fine (and a Wahl, fine manifold in the shop at the moment.) They are all great nibs, though I only use the extra fine for banking and entering grades in a grade book. The nibs are all smooth and the Eversharp feed is very responsive. With the fine nib on the Doric, I even get some nice line variation. I tend to write quickly and with very little pressure, and these nibs suit my hand well.
