One might be tempted to suggest that the pencil and box were not original to one another, but the pencil is inscribed "1873-1923" making it either one heck of a coincidence or, as I think, an absolute certainty that the pencil has always been in that box.
So, What does this mean?
This reminds me of a purchasing experience I had. I spotted some Parker 75 NOS and decided to get one. Now, I know Parker 75 have their own special box. Because my Father had a Sterling Parker 75 BP. So I was surprised when they brought out a pen case for Sonnet. I insisted on getting the original 75 pen case but they couldn't find it. It so happens that the sales attendant of that shop did not pay particular attention to matching pen case to pen. So, this could be the problem with that pencil.
