Full Version: Picked up an Etruria Nuda

I've been looking around for a Stipula Etruria Nuda for a little while. I have no clue what got me interested in a demonstrator but it seems when I get hot for something, they dry up. Finding this one was sporting. I wanted, and got, an EF nib and of course it has silver hardware and you all know it's a piston fill. The pen hasn't been filled yet, I feel the need to put something colorful in it just for the fact you can see the ink. I'll think of something soon because I'm anxious to try the EF nib, never tried a Stipula EF before. I'll put up some comments when I get going with it.

Congratulations on the new pen. I've had an eye for those Stipulas too but they don't come up that often and the price reflects that. If I might ask, where did you find yours? Please let us know how it writes. I like a Fine nib but have often wondered about an XF. How about a photo or two...

Congratulations on your new acquisition. Now , we can expect another good review. Matter of fact , this pen is on my must get list for some time . All the best with an exceptional pen.

Congratulations with a great new pen!

I think you'll find that the XF is a great writer, and that the springiness of the nib almost makes it feel like a flex nib - just careful, it isn't biggrin.gif.

It's a 14K nib, man Win, it didn't feel too flexible when I test drove it dry out of the box. What I expected for the 14 but it makes the 18K seem like a vintage Waterman. This is the Stipula version, now on the Swisher Nuda LE, I don't know what that had for a nib. I believe the Swisher was gold trim, yes? That might have had an 18 or 21K nib and I would guess it was the two tone nib also to match the trim.

No, I don't mind telling you. I got mine from Swisher's. I'm not sure they have another one but you certainly can check and see, you never know. When I sent my e-mail, Jennie said probably not but she'd look around and see to make sure. She wrote back and said there was one available due to a cancellation a while back. Now I have it. thumbup.gif I love happy endings!!

Anyway, PenGallery is cataloging them on their site, http://www.pengallery.com/details.aspx?productID=1979 but nib selection is limited and this has some "new salmon colored celluloid". I wanted the clear resin Nuda (which I got) and I'm not up on this version of the Nuda. It does look like something I might want to get for the collection though. I sent an e-mail to Pensinsaia also. He wasn't cataloging them but his reply was such that I understood he could get one. Which variation he had I don't know, sorry. Hope this was some help.

I had noticed that and think the reference to "new salmon colored celluloid" in the pengallery site might be a 'Copy & Paste' error..... where would you have the celluloid? smile.gif

When I was asking around to retailers, a lot of them referred to a "new run of Nuda's". Your guess is as good as mine on that. I understood the Nuda was a limited edition pen in a run of 391 or something, and I have a document with the pen saying that, with my pen number on it (and Swisher commisioned a run with gold trim as well). This made me wonder if Stipula was going to do a general release of the Nuda, then how would it be different so as not to make the original buyers "upset". Frankly, I thought this might be that version. The large photo in my link makes the pen look clear but if you look at the small photo on the homepage, scroll the right column down, the Nuda has an orange hue to it. Photo issues, or a new Nuda? wink.gif

No, looks like a copy & paste error indeed. There is a lot of confusion between the Etruria Nuda and the Suprema Nuda, however. Not even all dostributors are aware of the two different model Nudas....

I reckon they mean the Suprema Nuda with the new run of Nudas.

Congratulations, greencobra! For what it's worth, I acquired a Stipula w/ an EF nib, which was reground (amazing) to a stub italic. I'm not sure who did the regrinding (I acquired it that way). I had no idea an EF could be reground to write with any line variation, but apparently it can! I suspect it was one of Richard Binder's. The regrounded EF is wonderful -- springy, springy, springy!

I'm impatiently awaiting the arrival of a Stipula Etruria in the mail..... SO I'M JEALOUS THAT YOU ALREADY HAVE YOUR PEN! smile.gif

Thank you.

I would suspect Richard too. He does some amazing fine, detailed, work as you know. I have a 0.5 cursive italic from him for one of my VP's and it's what I call expressive, meaning a ton of line variation. My 0.5 started life as a fine, yours is even finer than mine. They're fun to work with, yes? And I get lots of compliments from non pen people on the way my VP writes with the 0.5 as I'm sure you do as well with this Stipula EF regrind.

girlieg33k, maybe you could write one of your ink reviews with that pen if you haven't done so already. smile.gif

I would like to share with you all that i have a Nuda on it's way to me with an 0.9mm Italic nib . All this discussion here really helped me make up my mind and order one .

Now , this would be my first Stipula . Are there some specific precautions / preparation steps that i should take before i start using the Stipula's in general and Nuda in specific. Your advices , would be highly appreciated.

Dev

Hey Dev, congrats on the pen. I've always just run my Stipula's out of the box, no issues. I've never flushed it first before start up if that's what you mean. I still haven't filled my Nuda yet, haven't decided on an ink color and I want to be careful my choice won't stain the clear resin. You'll like this most interesting pen. I have a factory 0.9 stub on another Etruria, not my favorite for everyday use, but a beautiful nib nonetheless. (I use the 0.9 and 1.1 for check writing. Gives a beautiful look with Diamine WES Imperial Blue.)

Enjoy your new pen, can't wait for your comments.

I can't wait either to hold this baby embarrassed_smile.gif Thanks .
As far as my limited knowledge goes . We should a) Flush a new Stipula with mild soap water first time and b)We should avoid using red coloured inks to avoid premature staining .

Any additions / corrections???

" Picked up Etruria Nuda"...

Had to read that 2x

In this cold and flu season, wasn't sure if that was a reference to a new strain of biological or internet virus <grin>

Greencobra,
Congrats. I have one of the original series ones that I bought a couple years ago from Bertrams I think. I have used various colors in it including some reds/ violets and the result is it has some permenant staining near where the piston "parks" when its full. I tried everything to get rid of it. q-tips up the barrel with ammonia solution etc. to no avail. (can't get the piston back far enough to get to the stain. the rest of the barrel cleaned up pretty good. I am satisfied as I bought it to be a user.

BTW--- there is a meeting of the Boston pen People group on March 2 if you don't already know about it. Back channel me and I will give you details if you need/want.

I still haven't inked it yet, I'm deciding on an ink. I'm expecting some staining but I'm pretty sure I'm going with Noodlers Tinanmem for the first fill. I plan on using it, I don't have any queens in the collection. I don't know what's holding me up here. Usually I get a new pen and dunk it in the first bottle on the desk my hand hits. Maybe cause you can see the ink I think it needs to be eye catching?

EDIT-thanks for the info on the group, I sent a PM.

I have an Eturia Amber with and extra fine nib on it's way to me . This pen would be having a 18 K nib as opposed to the 14 K one on Nuda . Anybody , has any experience on this one . How do you think this one measures up against the other excellent Stipula Nibs . I heard that Pelikan XF's are very scratchy , but had no choice for the Stipula as i wanted a fine and they were out.

An EF nib will always feel "scratchier" than an F or M nib, due to the fact the the writing surface is very small. much smaller (pi-r-squared rule and all that, plus stronger 3D curvature) than an F or M nib (0.25 for EF vs 0.35 for F vs 0.5 or 0.6 mm nib width for M), and hence hooks on fibres and small valleys and hills in the paper more easily.

However, I find the Etruria EF nib to be the smoothest EF I have ever tried, certainly much smoother than any modern Waterman, Parker or vintage EF nibs in my accumulation of pens.

When used with a well-flowing ink or ink with high lubricity, it should write with the feel of an F without a problem. Add to that the springiness and responsiveness of the large Stip nib, and you should be in for a treat smile.gif.

Folks ,

I would like to share with you all that i received my Eturia Amber with EF nib from Pengallery just some time back . It's indeed a stunningly beautiful pen . Thanks , to all of you for your excellent advice .

There were some concerns in this post that the Nuda doesn't have a clear , but a orangish tinge . That is not the case. Allthough Wimg clarified that doubt , i enquired with Pengallery and Lai sent me these excellent photos.

Dev.

Just one more small note . The photos at their site of Eturias are diffrent and outdated ones (those are the CC versions, whereas they only have the Piston fillers) . So , i thought that these pictures and information may help others who are interested.

Dev.
