Well, the price range is quite different.
Conklin simetric
http://www.fahrneyspens.com/Item--i-36187S $45 14K nib.
Waterman Charleston best price on the web $110 plus shipping 18K nib. Retails for over $169.
Pelikan Levels go for 20 euros in some european sellers at the bay.
Quite a different leage, IMHO.
Not trying to spoil the fun, just remarking it as it happens I have a Charleston in Silver trim with a broad nib that I may be considering to trade, too........
FWIW, my pen has a 14kt gold nib, not a steel, and as was pointed out-here in the US Charlestons can be had for less. I don't even know if they are still making gold nibbed Symetriks, but they were a fair bit more than $45 when I got it. The pen is basically new, has papers/box. The nib is a nice responsive nib that shows some line variation with normal usage.
While stating that you are "not trying to spoil the fun" your post looks like you are trying to, especially "as it happens" you have a pen you want to trade. Either that, or you don't have all your facts quite lined up, and that can be detrimental to others when casually thrown out as hard facts. As someone who sells infrequently, I still make every effort to be honest in what I do. I don't think you will find anyone with a beef regarding the pens I have sold, and I have been at FPN for quite some time now. As mentioned, I was just putting this out there. Had ferrania been interested in the Conklin, but felt the Conklin was insufficient exchange, he could have asked that some money get put into the pot. As pointed out, sometimes people get tired of a pen and are willing to trade just for the sake of moving a pen along.
So, while the pens mentioned may be in "quite a different league", perhaps they are not as different as you think.
