My fountain pen buddy at work is looking for a magenta/dark raspberry colored ink. This is not my area of ink color interest at all...so I seek your more knowledgeable opinion. Many thanks.

P.S. Oh, and working with someone who is just as geeked about pens as me is wonderful...but, man, do we enable each other's addiction.

Diamine has a whole group of colors in that family. Does you buddy lean more toward purplish magenta, which would
be Diamine Deep Magenta, more reddish magenta, less intense magenta?

Diamine Crimson and Diamine Scarlet look like magentas to me. The new Diamine Amaranth is red with
some magenta or purple to it.

Rohrer & Klingner Magenta is a nice magenta with a little less intensity, and a lot of depth

I'm quite fond of Herbin's Rouge Fuchsia, but that seems to be inobtanium at present.
Noodler's Saguaro and/or Private Reserve Plum may also fit some definitions of magenta.
gregamckinney
Diamine Claret is also in this range. I like it, but it is a very vivid color.

Best, greg

Noodler's Shah's Rose seems to me to fit that description - has wonderful depth and richness and thus avoids the rather tacky appearance of so many brighter, paler magentas (for the latter, Diamine's Crimson - it's not crimson at all but a decidedly loud magenta - should fit the bill perfectly).

Thanks for the speedy replies. Those sound like good options. I'm happy to hear more ideas as well.
Cedar
Rohrer and Klingner has one called Magenta.
If you're not familiar with it you can find comparisons at the Writing Desk: http://www.thewritingdesk.co.uk/ink_cat/inkchooser.php
or check the Ink reviews here.

I'd add R&K Solferino to the list, a magenta/purple color.
Deirdre
I don't know why I didn't think of this one since I'm currently using it in a pen, but Noodler's Kuprin is also a magenta (and bulletproof to boot). It's a Pendemonium exclusive in the US.

Another Noodler's in the Magenta family, fairly dark and reddish, rather
than purple, mostly, like R&K Solferino, would be Saguaro Wine.

I've forwarded your suggestions, everyone. She's actually decided on Noodler's Burgandy. The link that Cedar sent along in his/her post was very helpful. I'm going to put that to work in the future! thumbup.gif

Glad that you found the website of help. Personally, I find it dastardly on the ink budget!

I hope what's in the bottle of Burgundy she receives looks more like the swatch on that site than mine does; the ink in my bottle looks significantly different - has hardly any pink in its complexion and is darker (very nice colour nevertheless).

Less pink and more darkness is exactly what she's looking for. Glad to have the tip from an experienced user.

In that case, should she ever want to try one or two others in similar vein, two I've been using in the past couple of days -- Noodler/FPN Tulipe Noire (especially if watered down a bit) and Cartier's Burgundy -- may satisfy too. The Cartier is, unsurprisingly, nowhere near as saturated as the Tulipe Noire, which may explain in part why it shades so nicely (at least via the medium oblique nib I've been using it with).

Ah, yes, we have spoken of the Tulipe Noire, though we're both maxing out on purple/violet inks. The Cartier Burgundy--have to check that one out. You've been most helpful, Simon.

I love Noodler's Cactus Flower. Very nice magenta-ish color.
