Hi, I just joined up after purchasing a Schaeffer set off ebay. I, like Sergeant Schultz, know NOTHING about them except they are beautiful and I do enjoy old time craftsmanship. If any of you can tell me more about this set, I would be very grateful. I am sure it will need repair and hopefully you can guide me right there, too.

Also, did I get skunked on this? If so, at least it wasn't too expensive! rolleyes.gif

It's a Sheaffer's Crest set from the 1940's. It is a Tuckaway, which is the smallest size. It is a Vac-Filler, which will probably need restoration by a professional, as they require specialized tools to repair. After that it will probably be a great user for years to come. I particularly like Triumph nibs; they are generally excellent writers. There looks like there's some wear to the section, but that shouldn't affect function. Good deal at $7.50! I think you'll enjoy it once it's working. The overhaul might run you about $35, but at the price you got this set for, I'd say it's still worth it. The brown striated color is also not as common as gray or green.

Good luck on your Sheaffer journeys!

Welcome!
One thing I believe is, unless the item was badly discribed, I always think it's worth whatever it's worth to you. You see some pens going for a lot of money and that's ok. If it's worth it to you, fine.
Sheaffer has a whole bunch of collectable lines of pens. I know people who collect Targas, Preludes, Tuckys and on and on... Welcome!
cheers

Thanks for the replies and the help. Who would be someone well-versed in repairing these, or will the factory still work on them?

Send to to El Zorno (Ron Zorn) , to Richard Binder or to Ron Meloche. TBOMK all do the proper drill-n-rebuild approach to these, rather than the stuff-the-pink-plug-up-the-front fix. Not sure Sheaffer is taking in vintage restorations, but i wonder if with new distributor this might change.

Figure $35 + shipping or something like that.

Also, i find that set interesting.

Crests are nice pens. Crest Tuckies are charming little critters. And, my research on them has not been too extensive. But, i do find the clipless variants not terribly common. Not sure if they are catalogued or not. I just picked up a pair of clipless Crest Tuckaways last week, one in black one in brown.

Deacon,

I hate to tell you this, but you have just contracted a horrible disease. Never will a trip to an atique mall be the same and soon, very soon you will find yourself surrounded by grandmothers at yard & garage sales. They are looking for toys for grandchildren...you on the other hand are craving your next fix that has a white dot on top. Hiding pens in drawers to keep them out of the questioning view of your wife will become routine.

No shame in any of it. Enjoy the affliction...WELCOME TO THE CLUB!
