Full Version: Desire waterproof gel refill to fit Parker Jotter BP pen
The Fountain Pen Network > General Pen Topics > Writing Instruments

This is my very first post to the FPN:
I just put Parker's #30526 gel ink refill (blue ink, medium point) into my Jotter ballpoint pen, and I love the line, the color and how smooth it writes. But the ink is water soluble, and for me that is a big negative. I am looking for a refill that fits my Jotter and that puts down a similar line as the gel and is as smooth to write with, but whose ink is either waterproof or water resistant. The ink does not have to be a gel, but the line must look like the Parker gel line. I am aware that the ballpoint refills are waterproof, but the line is very different, and besides I already have a number of Parker Jotter ballpoint refills. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Welcome to FPN! So, you've been bitten by the blue Parker Gel pen bug. I really like this blue color and for a while I looked for it's equivalent luminosity in fountain pen inks. Then I got much more involved with fountain pens and ballpoints and have forgotten about it.

Anyway, if you want a Parker-style gel refill that's archival (i.e. waterproof and fade-proof), you may want to check out the Schneider Gelion #39 refill at this website:

http://www.passion4pens.com/site/735447/pr...103901Schneider

If you don't want to get the box of 10 refills and just want to try one first hand, the best way is to get one of the Schneider gel pens that comes with this refill. This pen will of course also take standard Parker refills as well as some ballpoint stick refills. Here is that Schneider Gelion pen:

http://www.passion4pens.com/site/735447/pr...100101Schneider

This gel refill is ISO/DIN 14145-2 rated, which means it is archival. I have not yet personally tried it, but I have tried their ballpoint refills and it writes smoothly. I hope that the color lives up to Parker's gel. Let us know which one you get.

Dear Gregoron,

Thank you so much for your suggestion. I did a little research and it appears that the Schneider Gelion refill has a 0.4 mm point, whereas the Parker has a 0.7mm point. If this is true, then I fear that the Gelion refill might be too fine for my taste. So, for the moment, I don't plan to try it. Should I do so later, I will be happy to pass along my impressions.
Appreciatively,

I should have mentioned Itoya Gel refills too. You can find them here: http://www.pendemonium.com/ink_itoya.htm

They are smooth and come in a variety of colors and widths (inc. 0.7mm). I believe that they are water-based and acid-free ink. I don't know if they're waterproof. Also, their tips look like tech pens and are not beveled like Parker's. Good luck with your search.

Not in a gel ink, but certainly a larger than medium line, what about the Fisher refills in broad?

I use Itoya AquaRoller refills (Parker style), which are not gel. I prefer the 1.0mm medium ball, which I was told at the pen store is coated with teflon. I took a black one out of a packet just now and scribbled on glossy card stock and held the card under the faucet and rubbed it with my thumb. Seems waterproof to me.

First, let me thank each of you who contributed a suggestion. It's very warm and fuzzy to have complete strangers trying to help me. This is a new experience for me.

Regarding Itoya, Itoya Refills I sent them an email on the subject of waterproof refills. (As I can find no means of attaching an Outlook email to this reply, I'll just copy here my message and their response.)

Subject: Waterproof Parker-style refill

Dear Itoya Customer Service:

Do you make a non-ballpoint refill, that fits the Parker ballpoint pens,
where the ink is waterproof? If so, please list all of the appropriate
identification numbers and description.

************************** ITOYA'S RESPONSE *******************
Hello and thank you for contacting ITOYA. Unfortunately we do not make
waterproof ink refills.

Other than our AquaRoller (ballpoint version) refills, the only other
refills that we offer in Parker-style are the quickDry Gel Ink Refills
(GMR-7 and GPR-7) which utilize water-based ink.

Best regards,

Regarding FredRydr's comment, I own several 1.0mm gel pens, and the line is wider than I like to use for general writing. I use the 1.0mm in red to underscore phrases and such. Also, I cannot "square" Itoya's response with Fred's comment that his refill is waterproof. Fred, can you give me a mfr's number for this refill you just tested? Could you describe the type of line it puts down, and if that line looks like a typical ballpoint ink line, or is it like the Parker gel?

And as to wege's suggestion to look at Fisher, on their website Fisher Pen Refills regarding the refill I believe you are talking about, "Fisher Space Pen Pressurized Refill Bold Point - Stock No: SPRB"
Do you happen to know if 1) is the line similar in appearance to the Parker gel, and 2) do they automatically supply the Parker adapter when you order the refill?

Again, thanks for any assistance anyone can provide.

Sharkle
Hi Cohjef, and welcome to FPN! I use Visconti (Parker-style) gels in my BPs. The fine is very fine, and the Medium says on the refill barrel 0.7. I ran water over and rubbed my blue fine writing just now, and it blurred a very tiny bit but retained color and sharp line. Visconti gels are a little pricey, but so far have lasted me very well. I get mine from Swisher Pens online and Bertram's Inkwell's store in Balttimore. I hope this helps!

Edited for typo.

Dear Sharkle,
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give the Visconti (Parker-style) gel in blue medium a try. This should solve my problem.
