If fountain pens is my first passion, then the second should be 3D art. I'm new to this art but I'm trying my best to get better. So I thought, why not combine the two passions? The fruit of this combination is this fountain pen here. It does not exist, I made it all using 3d software. I imagine it as having a long, smooth and flexible nib... What do you think? There's more coming and I hope they will be better. I'm currently trying out more complex and elaborate designs, hoping to create a pen collection with my designs! Ok, not the same as the real thing, but you don't get the chance every day. Hope you like it!

PS: I hope this post is not inappropriate for this section, since it features REAL pen photography...

All I can say is WoW!

thats quite something. It sure looks like a photo rather than something created on the computer.
Very nice I'd like to see more of your artwork

First look I couldn't believe it's really a work of computer graphics. Amazing!
Thornton

Not to mention the refraction in the stopper ;-)
His Nibs
Absolutely terrific! I want one of those as a real pen!

Stunning.

Thinks: Ohh, if I did this I needen't buy any more pens, just model and render them....

Can you reveal what software you used? eg Modeller, renderer (Kerkythera?) etc.

The pattern with the little squares on the barrel has been used a thousand times. What I like about this pen though is the nib. No, It's not a ball pen (it wouldn't be here if it was). I like to call it Fountainball! It sounds a bit silly, but it's the first name I thought of. And of course, it's not a trademark. Just joking! It's supposed to look like a ballpen, only the nib is sandwiched between two half cones, like the tip of the ballpen. It's for those who enjoy the simplicity of a ballpen and the comfort of a fountain pen (not me! I love the look of fountain pens!). I made this one up, but I'm sure it has been invented before!

These are variations on the same pen, different colors and materials only. The first one has a more romantic style while the second one is more antique-y.

Enjoy!

Amazing, just amazing. As to your fountainball - it definitely looks interesting, maybe worth getting to life wink.gif

I've never thought about modeling a FP in max, awesome work on your part, is the nib on the first one a bump map, specular map, or just some really good texturing?
-I'm gonna start one today, see how that comes out.

The first one has two separate materials applied, and the one of them has a bump map. Try fiddling with the Blend, Composite and Mask materials, to get the correct effect! It's not difficult. Maybe I can make a tutorial to help... Please do share your work after you finish!

Don't worry, I am and I will post. I work in 3ds max for a living I know my way around it. I'm modeling a parker .45.

Well, no, because I'm not a graphic artist! I just do it as a hobby and have no professional knowledge on pen making. Although, it wouldn't be a bad thing to do... Besides, I'm sure an expert should be able to see the flaws in my pens! blush.gif
penpimperLV
Nonsense! No flaws that I could see, but I'm by no means an expert.

They are fantastic, though. biggrin.gif

Your nib designs as well are outstanding--wonderful work.

Where can I buy one of those pens ... I especially like the first one.

Excellent work.
I like the black one a lot.
If you send the images to a company (preferably a smaller one), they might buy them. But I really don't know how these things work.
And stop being modest. These pictures are awesome. smile.gif

Amazing. It took me some time to realize that it wasn't a pic... congratulation for your skills!

A small curiosity: how long time it took to make - say - the first one? It looks like a lacquer urushi. Just amazing.

Cheers,
Andy
OK- I was totally fooled there- at first I thought you were telling us that you enhanced some regular photos to make them look more 3-dimensional, but you made these from scratch? Very nice.

I do 3D solid modeling for a living (I am a mechanical engineer), and I know that there is a lot of effort that went into making these. Tell me- did you start from a complete blank slate, or is part of this manipulating existing artwork? Either one is very, very impressive, but I am curious to know how you made these.

Andy
