I visited Papeterie Nota Bene yesterday and was extremely happy to see they had gotten a shipment of Kompagnon traveler's notebooks (by brunnen.de) that I used to buy in France. They are my preferred moleskine-type notebooks over Modo e modo since the latter are outsourcing in China with the known effects on paper quality.

For a short review. The cover has the same kind of feel as the Modo e modo ones, black oiled cardboard, i.e. moleskine. They come in only black, with blank, lined or grid (I prefer the latter). As far as I know, they come in three sizes: pocket (12.8 x 9.5 cm), 12,5 x 19,5 cm (very nearly A5, which makes them slightly smaller than the Modo e modo equivalent), and A4 (21,0 x 29,7 cm). I got three A5, that contain 192 pages, lies flat when open, and have the requisite pocket. I really like them. The paper is a nice cream and the grid is a thicker grey than in the Modo e modo. There are fewer lines in the A5 Kompagnon on the equivalent Modo e modo. The paper is a little rougher than I remembered but smooth enough, though nothing like Clairefontaine or Excompta. Some inks do feather on Kompagnon paper, but not all, in my experience, and generally less than on Modo e modo paper. There is no bleed through. What I like the most is the pen loop. PEN LOOP! I recommend if you can find them.

Wow, thanks for this! I want one...or more. Do you know if they come in a blank or ruled version? How does the price compare to the Modo & Modo moleskine?

As I indicated in my original post, they do come in blank and ruled, though there are fewer lines in the Kompagnon than the Modo e modo equivalent. As for price, it's good. 16$ for a Kompagnon, compared to 20$ for a Modo e Modo at Papeterie Nota Bene. Less in other places or online I'm sure.

Thank you! I was reading your post too fast and fixating on the pictures smile.gif I'll have to drop the folks at Nota Bene a line.
