Try Bill Roe's
Writing Instruments: a Technical History and How They Work. It's not long, but it's a real nice overview. I believe I bought mine from pendemonium but there are a few online pen shops that sell it.

I have two books that have helped me, one of which is on my shelf, the other is on loan to a friend, but I'd recommend...
"Fountain Pens - Past & Present, An Identification and Value Guide" by Paul Erano, second edition published by Collector Books, Paducah, Kentucky (2004) - approx. $25
I'll provide information on the other book as soon as it's returned.
Best of luck,
Ed
