I recently saw a Montblanc in all black which looks exactly like the shape of the Hemingway. Does anyone know which model this is and when it was made? What do such pens sell for?

It's based on the 139--a flagship pen made in the late 30s and into the 40s. You can usually find them for $2000-$2750 depending on the condition.

Edited to add this quick pic of my MB 139.

And to find one in great condition is quite rare. I saw one at the LA Pen Show this weekend for $3500.

That looks like a Pelikan with a 149 nib! Very nice, but I prefer the cigar shape of the current production MBs.

That cigar or torpedo shape is iconic. But, I don't know, I really like the looks of the 13x series. Here is my stash.

Thank you. They are L to R: MB 132, 134, 136, & 139, then vintage Meisterstück 142, 144, 146 & 149, then vintage Masterpiece (export) 142, 144, 146, & 149 with an extra 149 thrown in for good measure.

Best regards, Eric

That's an impressive collection there Niksch. How long did it take you to find all of those? Many years I'll bet.

smart aleck modus on:
The 139 war produced until 1952 and the shape of the last past war production line was the base for the Hemingway.
smart aleck modus off

Not bad your tray with the black torpedos, Eric thumbup.gif
I like the 13x better than the 14x ones too.

Niksch,

The 146, third from the right. Is that a "demonstrator", or just ambering of the celluloid? I ask because I have a 144 with similiar appearance I snagged off ebay recently from an antique dealer in Europe who knew nothing about the pen. Thanks

Oh and nice collection! Will need to start concentrating on the 13x models soon.

Rick, yes, it is 'ambering' of the celluloid. I have a couple other 146s with good barrels, but I cannot switch parts out like that. That is an original pen, maybe it's not a true collector's item, but it's all original.

Anyway, I'm not familiar with MB demonstrators in the typical sense of the clear barrels that we normally consider as demonstrators. I have seen some with cut-away portions of the barrel, however.

Eric,

Thanks for the reply. I too am not familiar with a true demostrator model in MB. My 144 is ambering but like you it is original and I wouldn't change it. I see MB's on the "bay" depicting a "rare"clear barrel, "hard to find"...it's funny at times.
