Full Version: Noodlers Ink and Parker 51

Sorry Guys,

Another gawd help us newbie question. Any words of caution or type/color recommendations regarding the use of Noodlers inks in p-51's?

I will learn what 'bullet proof' means and eel's blood or octopus bile, polar bear tears or something. I'm looking for a good ink that flows well, won't close all vowels beyond recognition (even with a fine point there is rarely any white in an 'a' or 'e') and most importantly, won't turn my "new" 51 into rust in my hand.

As a newcomer to the forum, I humbly apologize to the diligent among you who have answered this question 37 times before, but I just haven't found it yet!

Thanks,

John

John -

Welcome. There are no bad questions. And no bad modern inks to put into your 51. I use Noodler's ink in my Vacumatic 51 right now without any problems. Don't worry about it. The way I look at it, if the pen has survived this long, it can take a little saturated color as well.

Cheers,
John

We had QUITE a discussion on this back in the Parker forum (link below). Tempers flared, alliances were made and broken, and people said "diaphragm" a lot. In the end, some were for, some agin'. I will say you can't go wrong with Waterman, and it definitely won't offend your 51.

Depending on the color, Waterman can very well offend the 51. The grey ink that calls itself black offensive enough...

How about Diamine? I think it flows well in a variety of pens, comes in a variety of colors,
and has a nice looking bottle.

Parker Quink blues are okay, basic blues.

I was given advice at LA Pen Show yesterday to avoic PR in a 51, because the parts inside are
tiny and hard to flush... Not to get into a flame war, but my experience of cleaning a Parker
pen with a hooded nib that sat for awhile is that repeated flushing was needed. (This pen
had sat in my father's desk since BEFORE Noodlers was available.)

I use polar blue in my Vac 51 and aerometric 51's with no issues at all.

I use Noodler's Fox Red in my Parker 51; works great. smile.gif

(Admittedly, though, I do get a bit more leakage into the cap than I'd like, but it's nothing really bad. The way I carry my pens tends to jar them a lot, anyway...)

I have used the following Noodler's inks in various "51"s:

Black (currently in a black 46 vac)
Sequoia
Navajo Turquoise
Luxury Blue

Only the last was anything but perfect. and that was due, I think, to an unresolved nib problem in that particular Special -- it snagged on the hood badly when I was installing it, and has never worked quite right. I will probably replace it with a nib from a Hero 329 as I prefer that size anyway.

My inks are overwhelmingly Noodler's (and I'll be getting more) so I hope this is a good sign.

I would highly suggest you leave the P51s to us experts. You should therefore deliver all of yours to me. Beware! If you DO make the foolhardy mistake of inking this device (with anything; even plain clear water) and then attempting to write with it, you may find you are unable to take up any other writing instrument ever in your life. It does something weird to your hands, prevents you from being able to grip anything else.

Beware the P51!

I use Noodler's Blue in one of my P51s with great results. I, personally, would hesitate with some of their supersaturated colors. I second the suggestion to watch out for Private Reserve, some will probably argue against this, but PR Tanzanite stained the sac in one of my other P51s and made the flow horrible. Now I use Parker Quink Black in this one now and it is much better.

I have used Noodler's inks almost exclusively in my 51 vacs and aeros for the past 18 months with no known issues. The inks I use are Bullet Proof Black, Polar Blue, and Legal Lapis (made exclusively for Pendemonium). All of these have just the right flow and wetness for my taste. Of the three inks listed here Polar Blue is the least opaque and the BP Black is the most opaque. As a practical matter all of these are "bullet-proof." My personal, current favorite is the Legal Lapis. I also just got a bottle of Fox Red that has yet to be tried. Hope this helps.

Some of us, myself included, have found that initially using some old stock Parker Quink with Solv-X can help flush out any resistant gunge in a P51, without having to resort to using an ultrasonic bath.

Once it's working well, you can use pretty well any ink you want, except read up on what others on the FPN say about Montblanc and Lamy iron gall inks.

That collector is pretty finely combed. As with any heavy saturation inks, rinse often and it should be fine. Staining the sac is another problem, though if the pen has seen superchrome in it, it's probably already stained

Thank you. You confirm what I have heard before regarding Quink w/Solv-X, where can I get it?

Thanks

I asked a similar question regarding my first P51 and Richard Binder pointed me towards skrip red, and it remains my favourite red to date, I now have PR American blue in my P51, and it works fine...

It sometimes pops up on eBay.

You need to look for bottles that look like this --

or this

These bottles are from the '80s and '90s and are almost certainly in good condition.
(I know these particular ones were, because I bought them)
