Full Version: Dropped my B-nib 146 last night...

I'm not sure what I was doing, but when I uncapped my wonderful 'B' 146 last night it slipped out of my hands and landed nib down on the floor. Maybe it was the third bourbon that caused the accident, I don't know. The nib was splayed, and I was pi$$ed. No damage to the infamous resin, however. (that's another topic, but I've never had a MB 146 or 149 shatter or break on me, and I am not a gentle user.)

Well, I worked on the nib today; I patiently and gently worked the tines back together. Testing, 'bending', testing again, etc. At one point it wrote like a wet BB! But just now, at 2030, I got the nib back into the shape I was used to.

Not the best photos, but I'm happy to have it back in my desk set where it belongs...

It looks perfect. Good job.

Yes, from time to time a FP will just slip away from you, Bourbon or no. Like a slice of bread that falls jelly side down, a FP will try hard to spear the floor. I hate it when that happens. I am glad the resin did not cause any problems.

Congrats for undertaking a repair job yourself. I never would. Mine would be underway to Chuck Edwards at Fahrney's.

I usually drop pens when I am high on caffein. After a Scotch or three, I usually become quite cautious and finally put the pen down. But that caffein gets me every time.

Hi Eric, fine job you've done here. Well done! biggrin.gif

Do you happen to have snapped a photo of the nib before the repair? Interested to see the extent of damage beforehand. I myself is quite a clumsy writer and dropped my pen countless times. One of my pen nibs had been damaged to such an extent that a repair was quoted as impossible by the montblanc guys.

Nice job of fixing!

I have a personal rule about not listening to LPs on the main system after more than a single malt ortwo as I can't afford to replace that cartridge - maybe I should also classify my pens that way.... rolleyes.gif

I think that I would still send it in to be fixed. Montblanc's warranty should cover it.

Huh? Does GM fix your car for free when you get drunk and drive it at speed into a tree?

Does Sony give you a new CD player when your plan about using it as a wheel chock to keep your truck from rolling away doesn't work out the way you hoped?

Does Motorola hand you a new cell phone when you accidentally find out if doesn't work so well from the bottom of your swimming pool?

I don't think so............................ rolleyes.gif

The warranty won't cover this, and I'll tell you why. 1) I bought this pen for about $150 on eBay specifically because even though the writeup said it was an 'M' nib, I could plainly see it was a 'B'. Plus, it's a late 70s 146 and the nib has some delighful flex. 2) The seller had bought it second or third hand from someone else--so no original sales receipt, and certainly not one in my name. 3) If I sent it in I would have probably been charged for a new bi-color nib as opposed to a simple realignment of the tines. 4) I dropped the darned thing. No quality of workmanship or materials issue there.

But if I would have needed to send it off because the damage was to severe for me to do it on my own, it would go to Greg Minuskin or another nib repair person. Again, because of the age of this pen and the fact that I really like the nib.

That's a great job on fixing that nib. I know that John Mottishaw also does wonders with bent nibs.

Great job!! Now if you're not too busy, I have this Sheaffer Legacy II stub nib that the cat rolled off the desk onto the nib that could use a little work...
