Full Version: Sailor Kiwagura - fountain pen "safe?"

The title pretty much says it all - I'm wondering if Sailor's Kiwagura ink is safe to use in a pen. I've seen differing opinions about it - some seem to think it's fine, others seem to think it's akin to an india ink and shouldn't be used in a good pen. Is it like Platinum Carbon Black? I've used that in brush pens, but never in a nibbed pen. Web searches don't turn up much besides pthalo's blog and places like ujuku and ebay selling it. Any opinions?

I have been using this ink (in carts) exclusively in my Sailor Profit FP for the last 18 months, no problems yet. It rinses easily out of the pen. I take care to rinse the section before every refill. Only issues are that the ink tends to cling to the cart walls and requires a shake to shift the ink-body towards the feed. Otherwise I like its color and water resistant properties.

I can't comment on the Sailor Kiwagura ink, but I can say that I have used the Platinum Cabron Black in a Parker 45 and it performed very well, with no problems. I had the ink in the pen for 2 months, and then refilled a second time without first flushing. The second fill remained in the pen for over 4 months. No caking or clogging at all and the pen cleaned up just fine when I changed to a new color.

I have had Sailor Kiwagura inside a Sailor Comics/Manga Desk Pen (the suggested pen for use with that ink), for a couple of weeks now, and it has been great, with no clogging issues so far.

I'm also using Platinum Carbon in a Platinum Carbon Desk Pen, and Pilot Security in a very dry Pilot Desk pen, where the nib sometimes seem to dry out, and I need to make several strokes before it gets going again. I'll soon put Pilot Security into another Sailor Comics Pen, in the hope that the larger feed channels will boost the ink flow and help with the nib drying out.

I like Pilot Security and Sailor Kiwagura equally... the Kiwagura blackness is better than Platinum Carbon (I use mostly watercolor paper, and sometimes the ink can be quite gray), but Pilot Security is the blackest of the three.

I haven't used these inks in a normal FP... just the desk pens and a couple of eyedroppers, but I wouldn't hesitate to do so if I had the right pen. smile.gif
