Full Version: Postage on Traveling Journals

Hi folks,

I'm so happy to see lots of different traveling journals floating out in the world, and put forth by a number of different people.

But my latest one has hit a snag at the PO -- I believe it's 2.x ounces, which would make it 75 cents to mail. Some of the other journals (and the Moleskine Cahiers) weigh in at 1.x oz, so that's 58 cents to mail. But the latest one arrived with postage required ($1.14)! The next person went to the PO and again $1.14 was requested. (Unfortunately, the person didn't ask why).

I've been going to this page for postage rates (CLICK ON THIS LINK).

The journal was mailed in a standard letter-size envelope each time.

What gives? One of the nice things about this project is that you are supposed to be able to sitck it in a letter envelope, slap two stamps on it, and mail it, without any worry. I know some people are saying they don't mind the extra postage, but I'd like to keep it down. If postage weren't an issue, I would bind the journals differently. They aren't too rigid, and I think it doesn't meet any nonmachinable service charge.

I don't think there's ever been a problem with any of the journals previously (Moleskine Cahier's, nor MM-series hand-bound journals)... Does anyone have any ideas or advice?

(PS > Please don't request to participate in one here, there are other threads for that).

We have a small home based business and kept running into this kind of problem with our shipments. Turned out that because our packed envelopes are over 1/4 inch thick, they are classified as First Class Parcels. In the past, the Post Office didn't worry much about the thickness unless it got up around 1/2 inch or more, but now 1/4 inch seems to be the limit.

This might be what's happening with your traveling journals.....

That could be, or possibly the fact that the journal doesn't completely fill the standard-size envelope (side to side) makes it an "irregular" package? I haven't seen that problem personally, but it did occur to me on a couple that I sent. (Though those arrived without issue as far as I know.)
