The cynic in me wonders if there was a pattern to how these people voted.
Voters are told pen had 'invisible ink' :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Elections
"When it comes to election shenanigans, Chicago has been accused of just about everything.
But invisible ink?
Twenty voters at a Far North Side precinct who found their ink pens not working were told by election judges not to worry.
It's invisible ink, officials said. The scanner will count it."

Grr.
Doesn't it make you just want to take a few quarts of Noodler's Blue Ghost and go paint the election officials' houses with rude phrases? And then put some flashlights out that show what's written?
Grr.

I knew there was a reason that, by law, we are only allowed to use pencils in Australia.
Sounds like a flippant remark might have been made to the official (the "misinformed judge"), who didn't bother to run the comment past his brain before passing it on to the voters.
A batch of faulty ballpoints, I can understand. A flippant remark, I can understand. An election official running on autopilot, possible. Mix the three together, minor disaster.
If it was a conspiracy, there would have been a lot more than 20 people involved.
